Shim foils

Postby BrunoAlex » Nov 27th, '06, 23:38

Hello,

Does anyone know where I can buy some sheets of shim foil? I need it to shim some playing cards to use with the M5. All I can find on the market is a lousy aluminium foil that does not respond to the M5.

Also, I don't want to buy the entire M5 accessory kit...

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your reply.

I know that many on-line shops sell shimmed cards, but I don't want to buy them already made, I just want some of that foil that comes with the M5 Pro Kit.

I'll PM seige and see if he can direct me to a supplier.

Nothing Up My Sleeve seems to have disappeared into thin air... I too am trying to find some tissue thin shim material, but object to purchasing industrial quantities. Perhaps an A4 sized one would be enough for a lifetime.

Can anyone help me out? It'd have to be be ultra ultra thin but still magnetic obviously...

I get it from the trade counter of a local engineering supply company. Make sure you get steel, though.

Alas cards4magic only sell ready made shim Bicycle cards. I may try a hardware store. I always seem to have bad luck when finding magic gaff production supplies where others manage to have the greatest of luck.

I did find a first edition of copy of Derren Brown's Absolute Magic at a charity store for 50p the other day though.... hehehehe (na, not really)

Thanks for pointers. Can't think of any local engineering supply places in Manchester though.

Waaaaay back when Britain still had an Empire  common or garden razor blades were used as shims. I guess they're all stainless steel these days..... Next possibility was to buy cheapo sets of feeler gauges and use the very thin ones... again they might be stainless assuming they're still available, electronics and computerised engine mangement systems seem to have made such things quite redundant.

Here you go: http://www.yell.com/b/Swinton+Engineeri ... index.html

I also use slightly thicker brass shims to fabricate parts. You can cut it with kitchen scissors.

I had a similar question.
I bought my stuff online from the link in the thread - works a treat.
