japanese themed magic for in japanese restaurant ?

Postby Miniolo » May 18th, '11, 10:11

hello there:D me and a mate also magician got a job offered to do magic at a japanese restaurant... and we took it... but we do normal magic all kinds of stuff.. but what i really want to do is more theme magic something with japanese influence and making a repertoire of tricks that suits the restaurant...

i was thinking about fire productions (because of those wicked flames thaT THE CHEFF ALWAYS MAKES).. and some stuff like rainmen with flower shuffles etc and dragons pearl.... also i have some little memory wire ??? that is straight but if u heat it it will become shaped like a 8 of hearts.. so i can use that to with the heath of the plate at the restaurant.. anyone got any more ideas? its closeup walkaround.. some parlour can put in to

Ah! Look out, don't mix Chinese culture as Japanese.
It would be like introducing you as a Belgian magician or something like that.

Origami is japanese, as well as sushi, paper fans, Kabuki, Samurai, swords (Nihonto), Sumo, rice paper, tea ceremony and flowers like Cherry blossom. You might be able to adapt or create some magic to that.

I would avoid Chinese sticks or coins, unless you adapt to Japanese. If you use writing, don't use the traditional Chinese (Kanji) I would rather use Hiragana or Katakana to make it more specific.

Not wishing to make an obvious point, but whay not ask someone Japanese what they might suggest?
You may get caught in a stereotype trap here, and come across as insulting in some way.
Perhaps a small flower as a final load for a chop cup?
Or use some performance concepts from Japanese magic, rather than "things", (see Shigeo Takagi's book).

The first things that come to my mind are fans and origami. The Japanese also have a lot of really interesting myths and legends, perhaps you could base a routine around one of those?

If the Resaurant doesn't mind clearing up the mess, how about Snowstorm in China? That uses a fan and is Oriental in name!

It messes everything up if you do it right! I was thinking more of a sort of finale after the food had been finished as there's not a lot else you can do with 'snowflakes' all over the place!
