Like most kinds of collecting, the market depends mainly on what a large number of people recognise and get excited about.
So items associated with famous names like Houdini, Paul Daniels, or Derren Brown will be sought after and expensive, because they'll attract the general public and collectors from other fields (e.g. theatre). The same would apply to things like well-designed posters that are attractive in their own right.
Other items might generate a lot of interest within the magical fraternity, but not among the general public. They'd be worth less overall because they're of interest to fewer people.
With any collecting, the best advice is to acquire what you love because you love it, not trying to second-guess what the future value might be. If you love something and it also becomes valuable, then that's a bonus.
(I collect, but not in the magic field.)

"Hi, Robbie!" "May your mischief be spread." --Derren Brown
