The best mentalism effect WITHOUT a gimmick.. EVER..?

Postby MasterCyde » Jun 30th, '11, 21:38

Hey guys (and dolls)

I was conversing over a few cold Peroni's with a few magicians/mentalists over the weekend and a few topics of discussion came up (some too rude to speak of) but one of the 'magic' related ones were - What is your favourite ever mentalism trick that you like to perform?

We all stipulated that it could not include a 'gimmick' as such - i.e. no peek wallets/imp pads.

A few of the answers surprised me - just to mention a couple - one of them said it was their own version of OOTW and another was Banachek's Stigmata.

Mine was Acidus novus - for the sheer fact it is so damn deceptive and it leaves you open to perform it in many different ways.

I'd love to know what is your favourite mentalism trick you perform?

I don't think any of my mentalism uses gimmicks...

Oh, maybe a TT occasionally.

Your reality, sir, is lies and balderdash, and I'm delighted to say that I have no grasp of it whatsoever.

What's your favourite effect you perform? I'm looking to add something serious to my arsenal seeing as I haven't added an effect that's lasted the test of time for about 2 years

What about Sensory Perception? I still haven't had the courage to perform that yet but I've heard it kills.

You don't have to be a mind-reader to know what I'm going to say. So I won't say it.

He really can read minds!!! But cold reading in general actually. Hugely under-used by both magicians and mentalists. Master cold reading and you don't need owt else. Honest. It is mentalism in its purest form - just ask Corinda.

I'm with Paul. Nothing hits home so hard as a good reading. Combine it with a simple and direct bit of mentalism and you have a miracle on your hands.

For a large audience hypnosis and Q&A reign supreme. I dream of some day doing a completely propless Q&A.

I'm still conflicted about the Centre Tear - It just seems too obvious. Why would you get somebody to write something down only to then tear it up? I can see the justification in getting someone to write something down "so you don't change your mind or forget it" but then I have never seen the justification in tearing it up.

I'd love to hear some ideas on it because I fear I'm missing a huge swathe of opportunites by not using the technique (although the Stealth Assassin Wallet is on me at all times, which provides a suitable alternative!)

cheers,

Sean

Yeah, palm reading or hypnosis all the way. Or pendulum stuff is quite cool and impromptu with a bit of imagination.
