Treasure Hunt Trick ???

Postby kry10 » Jul 19th, '11, 19:19

Hi guys, can someone PM me with information on this question please ?

Many years ago I created a trick where you have on a series of cards, I think it was a 4 by 4 grid, with a map drawn on it, and, after the spectator freely choosing any place to start from, you followed a series of instructions which eventually led you to the only square with an X on the reverse, I think it was in Abracadabra magazine, does anyone know of this or the method by which to direct people to a specific square by following directions ?

Max Maven did this sort of thing on UK TV years ago using nine murder weapons. Perhaps there's something amongst his publications which will help?

Is it the kind of thing DB used to pick the 'victim' in Seance?

If so it seems Max Maveny, but I'd bet it's in Fulves. There's also a version in Stephen Minch's Book of Thoth...

I've always thought of it as one of those widely available ideas, but now that I'm thinking about it, I couldn't say where to look other than Fulves of Minch...

That was the one I was thinking about, it's called Towering Prediction in Minch's book.

I suspect it is a similar method to DB's in seance and I believe it's the same as the photo effect in the Box of Delights Seance kit (Dead Ringers).

DB did indeed do this and the credits list Max as 'Interactive Consultant' (or something similar) - Personally I would swear that I've read it in a Fulves but without rooting through them I couldn't say for sure where exactly.

I'm pretty sure there's also a version in Sam Dalal's book of effects with ESP cards. Though I can't imagine that helps much...

The principle originated with Martin Gardner. There are two examples in SW Number Magic and one in The Sherlock Holmes Book of Magic by Jeff Brown (there's an effect of mine in there too).

Yes and if you watch it you can establish the moves required and the layout. I am considering using it for my séance!

I'll check Karl's Fulves SWME when I get home and check if it is in there.

One source for the Maven version, which is not the same as Gardner's, is Secrets of the Astonishing Executive by Bill Herz.

For all those who do track down Max Maven's version it's well worth it. I've been quietly doing that routine for yonks using a sealed jiffy bag containing, in the good old days, a pre-recorded cassette tape but now a CD which can be presented/posted to the organiser some time in advance if necessary, then using their own tape/CD player on the night and it always goes down well.
