DIY Strippers

Postby Vanderbelt » Aug 8th, '11, 15:44

Has anyone made any attempts (successful or otherwise) at creating their own strippers?
Any tips/words of warning? What are you using to round the stripped corner?

And before anyone suggests to just buy off the shelf - I'm wanting to convert a genuinely aged deck, not some fresh new bikes.

How about ageing one off the shelf? Possible? or does the deck you want to create probihit this?

I tried ages ago but gave up because I couldn't get the quality. Then USPCC brought out those lovely factory sealed ones and I abandoned my efforts.

It would be a compromise, the deck I have works wonderfully with the story for the effect. However, I *am* thinking that this might have to be the way it goes. I'd considered it before but quite frankly I seem to suck at aging new decks - I just end up ruining them.

If this is the way I go, can anyone recommend a good non-bike backed stripper deck? Do the USPCC do any?

I've made them by tightly clamping the deck and then removing the surplus material gently by rubbing it on a sheet of fine wet & dry paper glued to a flat board. Takes quite a while and needs to be done very gradually. Rounding the corners off was no problem using same board and wet & dry paper. I practised with a couple of cheapo Tesco decks to get the hang of the process.

Having sadi that, I'd prefer to buy proprietary decks as they are neater but if you're involving an aged deck then the preparation needn't be quite so precise as with a new deck of Bikes.

Cards4magic have nine different, non-Bicycle stripper decks. Some are only a few quid. The more expensive ones are made from other "name" brands, like Aviator, Fournier and Piatnik.

Dai Vernon mentions an impromptu method in 'Inner Card Trilogy' called 'Bathroom Strippers' (the polite name) Card cheats were known to use this. It involves a broken window pane; I wouldn't recommend it, if you slip, it might not just be the cards that get stripped!

If the cards you want to use are already aged, it means you are going to have to artificially age the side you strip to match the other sides, as it wont look the same after its been cut.

That sir, is a very fine point indeed. Right... time to (once again) experiment with card aging. A long evening awaits.

its always anoyed me about not being able to get a bike deck stripped and marked so I would strip my own decks from factory marked decks, still expensive.
thease days you can pick up wizard decks realy cheap, bridge sized though but very functional.
or you can go for a delan deck or at a push dynamos take on teds deck and strip it yourself.
its pretty easy to strip your decks with a band and an exato knife or sandpaper, take a ruler and pen and mark your strip angle, it dosn't need to be much and use your tool to take off the mark and your set remember less is more in this situation.
