First performance, first success - buzzing!

Postby Alfred Borden » Aug 8th, '11, 21:46

Ok, so texted my mate to think of a card today at lunchtime.

I built it up by texting him that he can change his mind until 4pm but stick with his choice after that

I met him to play football just before 8pm, pulled a ID out of my wash bag and asked him what his card was

"The three of clubs"

I then fanned the deck and gave him the only upside down card there was, I've never seen a reaction like it

"what the f***, how the f*** did you do that, oh sh**, that is absolutely awesome", he was still shaking his head as we walked onto the football field, then "that'll blow my mind for quite some time.."

Afterwards I told him I had one more if he wanted, he couldn't wait, so out of the washbag came a SV deck and he picked his card. I then told him I was going to deal the deck into two piles and he could eliminate one, this continued until only one card was left...his phone rang, his girlfriend,
"one second, I think Alfred is going to amaze me again" he flipped the card - the deck went back into my washbag and I could hear him talking

"Alfred texted me earlier and told me to think of a card, and when we got to football it was the only upside down, amazing"

I drove home with Gimmie Shelter blasting full volume, buzzing!!

*Alfred may or may not be my real name

Great stuff for both of you. performance is definatly the best form of practice, although to perform you need to practice first, a bit of a visious circle. I like you thinking with asking someone to think of a card and have the chance to change their mind for the entire day. My better half is away at the moment and it's kind of given me an idea for her (although she's a little be over the whole magic thing having to deal with it most days).

The text that got to him was the one I sent late on, "you changed your mind a few times but think I have it now"
He texted back "yeah, went for something obvious, then changed for something else but am now happy with my choice"

I am sometimes bad for knowing how the method is done and forgetting how great it is to see the trick for the first time...took me back to first encounter with ID, blew me away completely

Pressures on now, just got a text saying "make sure you bring the cards in tomorrow!"

Well done that man!

Firstly, I applaud your approach to the ID. Whether you know it or not you've achieved an important facet of magic which many a more experienced magician forgets. You gave your participant a real emotional investment in the trick. By asking him so early in the day and with the subsequent text he'll have been not only deciding on a card but also wondering and theorizing as to why you've asked him, why he can't change his mind after a certain time etc. All this builds for him so when you finally reveal, the emotional response is far higher for him.

Secondly, leave your cards at home! Let him wait, tell him you're working on something pretty special. Let that excitement and expectation build up.

Thank you very much Sir!

My thoughts were to maybe do "Out of this World" THEN "Gemini twins", then hand the deck over as he wants to show me a trick

BUT maybe I prefer your "working on something new" approach

Thanks very much for compliment though, means a lot, and means I can crack on with RRTCM with new vigor!

I don't know if it's slightly against the rules, but a pdf I've written has a quite different out of this world effect in it that you may like. It's currently being proof read by mandrake while he's on holiday so if you could wait that long, it might be worth a look. Is that a little bit naughty of me? Oh well.

You could have predicted that without an ID. Try this a few more times and you'll understand...

I am a mere novice Sir, you no doubt have years of experience and can no doubt do that trick a lot better than me though

Like I said, first effort
