Beginners 1st shopping trip ?

Postby jon_kent » Aug 9th, '11, 21:06

I've got a bit of money to spend on my new fav hobby :D

Im making my 1st trip to a magic shop on sat (alakazam) and im wondering whats the best things for me to get ?

Im working my way through RRTCM but i get the feeling my friends (after showing them dynamo and fool us lol) are getting bored of card tricks and want to see something a bit flashier so what sort of gimmicky trick do you think i should get ?

I was thinking extreme burn 2.0 but i dont have any other ideas.

Cheers guys.

Get a thumb t** and a book of tricks using it. They'll set you back about £10 in total and once you've got confident with it you'll be vanishing all sorts of things just for the fun of it and seeing what you can get away with.

I was at a wedding a few weeks ago and the tables had glittery little bits all over them. It was great fun after a few drinks to scoop them up and drop them into my hand before opening the hand to reveal it was empty as it freaks out anyone who's half watching what you're doing as they chat. Sure, it's not the most astonishing trick but it's a giggle.

The more you look into this device though, the more you'll find out just how useful it is and you'll be amazed at the variety of uses people have devised for it.

Honestly, your best investment would be a book on general magic.

Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic is what many would consider an essential book in any library.

If you can afford the investment - check out the Tarbell's Course in Magic books as well.

Don't focus so much on gimmicks and shiny props. With some digging, you'll find most (if not a variation of all) of the effects you've seen on Dynamo and Fool Us, can be found in these classics.

Good work Jon. There's a whole feast of entertainment in Mark Wilson just waiting for you to unlock it.

Photo-synthesis is getting some very good reviews, I am not sure how it would fit in with your current skill level though, could maybe ask the guys at the shop, they'd be good judges of it. Heck they might even be able to demo it for you.

For an on-going idea about items and finding your own reccomendations, you might want to try the Wizard Product Review. This is under the banner of a shop run by David Penn, and he is helped out on the show by Craig Petty. They can be found on youtube, itunes and facebook and put out a half hour (roughly) reviews of various products, (normally about 4 per show) every Wednesday. [/url]

Thanks for the help mate ! :D

Im enjoying RRTCM but even though there card leaves the pack and ends up in my shoe or back in the box behind them i get the feeling they would rather see me put 1 of their phones into a bottle lol

Thats why extreme burn caught my eye ! Because its 1 of the more visually impressive tricks, its not too hard to do i believe and everyone was shocked when they watched the trick on tv.

Ask in Alakazam ...

They are great fellows who are very friendly ... But bear in mind they are a shop who will willingly take your money :)

Seeing as you've already got RRTCM maybe get a book/dvd to do with coins?

Bobo's book is good for coins I've owned my copy nearly 10 years and still going back to reference/work through it.

I can second Arkesus's recommendation of the Wizard Product Review. It's honest, entertaining and often gives a better idea of the scope and limitation of the effects which otherwise aren't mentioned in the promotional videos.

Don't try to imitate what you see on tv. Do something new! Maybe learn sponge balls or coin magic, and present them in an origional and entertaining way. Cards can be great, but try to keep variety.

You can't got wrong with Mark Wilson or Bobo. You're far better off getting some good books and learning the basics rather than buying some flashy gimmick which you'll probably find totally impractical to perform.
