Time out from magic

Postby Danielmp007 » Aug 16th, '11, 11:11

Hey all,

Iv been out of the magic scene for about a year now due to work, (iraq and qatar detachments mainly), and have found that I still remember most of my tricks.

Is it really like the riding a bike metaphor?

Has anybody else been out for a while, come back in and still remember your routine?

I've recently started up again too.
Remember most of the material i know with cards but my coin work has suffered greatly, my hands have got out of practice.

Joy did come last night though when practicing the "coin falls up" with a poker chip and got about 18 inch out of sheer luck!! a bit more perseverance has got it working quite well and won't be long till i go to a smaller coin and can perform it again out and about.
I could do "coin falls up" quite well before my break but it's took me about a week to get half decent results again and reminded me what a swine it was to learn in the first place.

I've also been using the top of an okito coin box to practice the move, i think shifting the extra bulk is what made the poker chip feel so light and produce the result previously mentioned.

Same. I had a 2 year break generally due to growing up, college et. With my cardistry and card stuff, I could execute sybils and everything but it was all rusty. Although finding it that I'm having to learn new card effects all over again.

I had a 3 year break, mainly to do with lack of motivation (gimmicks never got me very far!).

I am now purely specialising in cards and the satisfaction is much greater.

And yes, I could remember all my old tricks :)

Lol, its funny you should mention coin falls up as I can still do it with a poker chip but cant no longer with a 2p. Practise will get me back up to standard I suppose.

I actually think having a break is a good time. I didn't stop completely but I did cut back while I was at uni, got interested in some other things alongside magic.

When I went to America I met some magicians who were really enthusiastic and that rubbed off on me. I would have been a little rusty but during my 'down time' I had bought David Stones close up magic dvd and learnt the three card monte from there, so I had that one routine which was really good, and as my enthusiasm came back, I practiced more, my new friends offered advice, I did more performances for friends, and then eventually paid bookings, and the rest as they say is history....

Stop, don't quit.

I found that after say a year of not really touching cards except for playing poker that I couldn't remember any tricks at all, but that card handling and the sleights I knew were all in tact. It was just a case of re-reading material on the order of a particular card trick etc.
