DVD Player

Postby CArlight1958 » Aug 26th, '11, 12:09

All of my learning is done with DVD format.

Last week my TV/DVD went breasts up :(

Well the DVD bit, the TV is still ok.
I went along to my local TV specialist who wanted £28 just to look at it, plus the cost of
any parts it might need.

Sod that, so I went along to Asda, & bought an Asda DVDM101 price £27.00.
These are great little HDMI players. Dolby Digital/Multi Region, & they have a very good
slow motion funtion for those teachers who race along a little too fast for us learners.

Thought this might be of help for anyone who is looking for a cheap good DVD player.

Here's a wierd thought; I can't remember owning a DVD player since I was 18! I've always used a laptop or an xBox

The problem I have is I do most of my magic watching on a little mp4 player. Now, finding a relaiable bit of software for getting a DVD onto this little things is a nightmare! (either that or I just don't really know my way around the internet, it's possible).

It is this one.

I have a Creative Zen and found some software all configured and ready to go to make stuff fit the screen nicely.

I did however find watching anything on a 2.5 inch screen both pointless and annoying. :(

I have bought a nice few DVDs over the years, and sometime I intend to buy a DVD player so that I can watch them. In the meantime I will have to stick to the books.

I can recommend the viDrop video converter. It's the only video converter I have that knows how to encode AVIs for my MP4 player. It might take a bit of trial and error to find the right settings, but it's fairly easy to fiddle with. Anyway, it's free, so you've got nothing to lose!

I think viDrop can rip from DVDs, but can't say for sure. There's certainly a button on it marked "DVD", so it must do something. (EDIT: The website says it can rip from DVDs, so I guess it can.)

You could also try a little program called Handbrake. Originally from Linux, there is a Windows version available. The conversions take a while, but it allows you to transfer from DVDs, as well as convert existing files to .mp4.

Ripit is also an excellent program for any Mac users. Think it uses a Handbrake plugin.
