I expect Peter Nardi from Alakazam will be selling the lot when the programme has finished!

Damn my work shifts - I've missed 2 of these episodes now :(

Also, it seems STILL to be removed from 5 on demand ... any other ideas about why this is the case?

Dan

(I'd love for the effects used to be on sale, but maybe have them put off for a while? sent to magicians in a secret code or something? ie dont market it as "This is how the whole show was done" ...)

So, after watching both episodes, I'm a tad confused ... the show kind of makes sense but at the same time seems to be a case of "am I clever enough to be able to do this magic trick" ... am I missing something here?

Dan

NB, This could be a case of magicians guilt, as the guys I watched it with really enjoyed the show (several of the "tricks" they got straight away ... the One step ahead concept of the emotions in the envelopes for instance, and the collared effect seemed VERY shifty)

No show!

No Impossible tonight.

As I mentioned on the green place, channel 5 have helpfully rescheduled the rest of the series to go after their latest acquisition, Big Brother. Which airs in August. So if you wanted to watch the rest of the series, you'd better be a fan of waiting.

Great work 5.

I was working when Impossible? was aired, so I've only just found time to sit down and watch the first episode.

I quite liked the format. Not too bothered about the criticisms over the 'can i do this trick?' idea. I think it's enough to leave the doubt in contestants' minds that he could have pulled a fast one, or they might have been playing the game legit.

What annoyed me was the production design. From the lighting and the set, right down to the music, the whole look was put together as a Derren Brown show. Obviously, the people to blame for this are the Suits in the office who don't have the courage or creative vision to let new blood make its own mark.

As such, I thought that Philip Escoffey was compromised - trying to walk a line between his own persona and his vision for the show, and the executive 'wisdom' concerning 'what sells'.

That said, I'd never seen Philip perform prior to the show, so can't say for sure that this wasn't the real him. I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt though.

Thanks. I was baffled by its vanishing and couldn't find a reason for it anywhere (which left me assuming, "Golly, it must have got *such* poor ratings that it's been canned after two weeks, even with the remaining eps - judging from the trailers - already having been filmed.").

Anyway, in the My Two Cents column, I thought there were probs with the show. For example, that the climax with the cases essentially means it all builds up to a coin toss. Though this may make for a tense 90 seconds or so, it's dramatically flawed. As a comparison, imagine a novel where we follow a character as he struggles, makes decisions, has successes and disappointments, etc., then, when we get to the last page, we're told that two versions exist. In one the character triumphs, in the other he's hit by a meteor and dies: an equal number of each was randomly assigned when the books were printed. Which we've got is simply down to whatever version of the novel we happened be sent by Amazon. It'd feel rubbish, because the climax is now unrelated to what's gone before - in fact, it makes what's gone before irrelevant. There's no resolution, good or bad, because the whole 'journey' of the book is rendered pointless by the clear arbitrariness of the climax.

However, on the plus side, the show does work on multiple levels in a way I can't recall any other magic show doing. Watching with my SO and my youngest offspring, when the host asked, 'Impossible?' we all enjoyed trying to answer the question. I did so silently, in my head, like everyone else here, "Hmmm... can I figure out a method to do that?" while SO gave her lay-person's style theorising ('He'll know she chose yellow because that was the colour she had uppermost for slightly longer', etc.), and youngest offspring simply tried to work out whether, from his experience, Derren Brown could do it.

So, it's a magic show lay people can enjoy, and so can magicians (in more than the usual 'admiring the presentation' way).

Reading this reminded me of the Lost TV show.

Maybe we will see a few small changes in the format if a second series of Impossible is commissioned.
