I don't recall ever reading a magic book when I was little that told me that female magicians must wear a corset, high heels, micro skirt and a revealingly low cut top. They generally advised that female magicians should wear a sensible evening dress, and at least one said trousers.
I do not believe any magicians who wear a corset and high heels and show off lots of flesh have been forced to do so by anyone. They have chosen themselves that style of dress because that is how they want to dress and it suits their act that they have chosen to perform. If they didn't want to dress like that then they wouldn't have.

Yes the outfits of female magicians assistants have been very revealing in the past, but not all of them. But the original post was not about magicians assistants. It was how magicians are expected to dress of either gender. Of course, as Dale rightly points out, the outfits of magicians assistants of the past have influenced the way female magicians dress to this day. But I think it doesn't take much imagination to come up with an alternative character that you prefer and to dress accordingly if you want to.

To me suggesting that a female magician can only dress in a corset, high heels and revealing clothing shows a failure of imagination in my opinion.

I'd have a think about what women wear when performing classical music.

It seems to be more of an appropriate simile than anything else.

I'd like to say I've followed this thread with intense interest but that wouldn't be true; I started reading with interest and then got extremely weary by the second page so I've only glanced over most of the other posts but do have a few points to make which may or may not have already been covered. I noticed right near the start the statement "I agree that character is everything". So wrong. Character is a part of it, personality is the bulk of it and ability is the smaller slice of the pie. Personality is the most important factor, they have to like you or you're doomed. You could be the most accomplished magician around with the snazziest character costume in the known universe but if the spectators don't like you it all counts for nothing.

So, characters... that's fine if it works for you but you're limiting your audience. Dressing up as a serving wench or a knight of the round table is fine if your intended market is re-enactment banquets, themed restaurants or theme parks but you're going to look a bit out of place at a high end black tie event unless others are doing the same.

I understand the perception of how women are viewed within magic and how it can make one feel self conscious, etc, but, and here's the important bit, that perception is, to a large degree, mythical. It doesn’t really exist. You might get a bit of old fashioned patronising from some of the older chaps but that's just the way it was back then, don't expect them to change now. Generally no harm is meant or intended, it's just their way. You might get some cheeky comments from some of the younger lads but so what, you probably make equivalent comments back without thinking about it.

*IF* you experience any it'll be from within pockets of the magic community. *IF* you're looking at being a pro, the magic community isn't going to be paying your rent, the clients are and they won't care about you being female or not, they will care about whether you will be good or not and make their event, product launch, party, whatever, better. So, concentrate on being the best, most entertaining magician you can be because THAT is what will get you booked.

Some time ago I accompanied a friend to an audition and afterwards she was moaning about how she didn't get it because she was a girl, etc, etc, etc. I had to point out to her that it was nothing to do with the fact that the client was a sexist pig, it's because she did a rubbish audition and didn't deserve the gig based on that. I do get irritated at a lot of these types of discussions because a large percentage of gender politics is used as an excuse rather than a reason.

And while I'm ranting, I also get irritated at people saying that women can only really pull off mentalism by playing up the fortune teller image. Nonsense. It's what pays my bills and I've never worn a headscarf in my life or looked in a crystal ball.

I kinda think that one of the stigmas here might be that most men do not like to be fooled by a women.
To think that a women might be able to fool a man, for most men, is just not in there genetic make up.

I don't think it has anything to do with gender. It's all about the magic.
If your good at what you do, then I love to watch. Male, or Female.
Makes no difference to me if you have two heads.

IMHO, being more outgoing is one of the things one needs to perform.

I think there is always gonna be the argument. That men are better than women.
Works both ways, but we do have the upper hand in most fields. (Magic not being one of them)

That's why I never end a statement with "FACT!".

I usually just say, "I've heard"...

Unless it's a wildly improbable celebrity fact.
