Secret Santa

Postby Alec Burns » Oct 27th, '11, 15:54

This may be too ambitious but who in the UK fancies an online secret Santa? :D

We could cap the gift at £10 not including postage.

It's a 'magical' time of year and that there, was the link!

Just so I can gauge interest, please respond below with HO HO HO if you think it's a good idea or NO NO NO if you can see any problems this may cause.

I'll run a poll also for the ninja's of the site, lurking in the shadows!

I love secret santas, so i voted yes ( not very secret )

The only thing I'd be wary about is that in workplaces people tend to know eachother better than on forums. My old workplace was really tightly knit and they stilll asked people to write down the kind of thing they liked when entering their name, and even with this advice considered some people were disappointed.

But I just like buying presents for people

I'm in!

I like this idea and it's in the spirit of the "giving thread" I started so many moons ago.
Count me in. I already known what my lucky person is getting too!

Cheers

I think *expectations* are where people often go wrong with Secret Santa. If it's seen as pure fun it can be great, but when people start expecting something of equivalent value, thought or coolness to whatever they bought it can only go wrong.

Treat it as nothing more than fun and all's well.

(Someone I knew had an interesting Seret Santa a few years back - one item below £1 - one item below £10 and one item EXACTLY £2.14 (or something like) - receipt required. That made for some fun, even though I wasn't involved.)

I agree with big shot. It should all be viewed as fun so therefore anything of a ten pounds value would be acceptable.

As regards the logistics, I would collate all addresses and make a random draw. I would then pm you with who you should send a gift to! :D

Good response so far!

If thats the case count me in, not too interested in trying to work out what someone would like. Would try and send them something to make them giggle instead :D

I think a combination of putting in the effort when you buy a gift and expecting nothing useful in return would mean everyone (hopefully) getting something half decent for the price and avoiding disappointment too.

Perhaps a better idea would be an approximate gift value rather than a maximum - that might avoid someone just getting a stupid toy from the pound shop which wouldn't really be in the spirit of things.

Seeing as there appears to be so much interest, I'll check that all of this is ok to do through the forum and then ill post a new topic inviting people to participate.

I'm thinking the middle of November would be a good time to start this up.

Spread the word people. Christmas is coming to the forum!! :D

I did Secret Santa at work once (and I emphasise once) after only working at a place for a few weeks. Bought a fun loving, humerous older chap a selection of real ales, thinking can't go wrong with that especially just before Xmas.

As he opened it his face momentarily lit up, then dropped and he mumbled, 'yeah thanks' as a number of other spectators gasped and shook their heads. Keeping my head down, somewhat confused I waited until after the giving had finished and asked someone what the problem was. "I don't know what b***** thought that was funny, but that guy is a recovering alcoholic."
