Over-sized bicycle playing cards - where to buy from ??

Postby moonbeam » Oct 27th, '11, 17:45

I'm after a deck of bicycle playing cards - but I want them slightly larger than the normal size.

When I say slightly larger, the length doesn't matter - they can be the same length .... but the width must be no more than approx 5mm wider .... poss even 1cm.

Are these available anywhere - if so, plzzz let me know where ???

Thanks :)

Would it be easier to buy some smaller ones? i.e Bridge size against Poker size.

Custom R&S decks made to specification - PM me for details

If you buy a normal set of Phoenix cards, they also sell Parlour cards which are inbetween jumbo cards and regular poker size.

if you are going to do this, DONT buy bicycle cards, because the design on teh back is also a totaly different size, so it will fit within the borders. If you can buy something with an all over back patten, then it wont look so obvious.

mind you,if you are just after locator cards, cards for magic stock wide cards. These are cut wider than normal, but otherwise look the same.

Just thinking about it - the design on the larger deck doesn't matter, as the backs won't be seen.

The smaller ones have to be bicycle backs though.

I do need 2 full decks - not just odd cards for locating etc.

So, if anyone knows of a deck that's slightly larger than the bridge size (but smaller than the poker size) ..... or I could always use the poker size deck as the smaller deck and a slightly larger deck of a different design.

Hope this all makes sense - I know what I'm going on about ...... any suggestions plzz, 'cos ideally I don't want the difference in size to be too much ??
I could prob make do with the difference in size between poker and bridge size, but ideally I'd like the difference in size to be a bit less :(

i suppose you could buy some belly squeezers. Expensive at 31 pounds for 2 decks, but you end up with a deck thats concave at the side, and another that convex... effectivly giving you wide cards.

I'm not entirely clear what is your objective, but would it be more cost effective to buy two regular decks and then trim a thin strip from the sides of 52 of them using a guillotine? You can get a guillotine for £20-ish.

You need a guillotine with a sword type blade, not one with a cutting wheel. Can be bought from any office stationary supplier.

.... after ALOT of messing around - I'm halfway through my little project and I now know that I need 1mm trimming off both sides of a deck of cards - ideally 2mm off the total width, def no more than 3mm in total. Would a guillotine be able to trim such a small amount off ?? I'm wondering what I'd get charged if I took my deck of cards to a stationers and ask them to do it, rather than spend £20 on something that I'd probably only use once.

Would you only use it once?
If you're doing a trick a fair bit, surely you're going to need to replace the cards when they start getting too worn?

The deck of cards and gimmick that I'm making would only be used for one particular trick, so I'd hope that it would last quite a long time, so I doubt it would be worth while buying a guillotine. It all depends on what a stationer's would charge me for trimming a deck of cards .....

Assuming they have a way of setting a 1mm cut so they don't have to measure it every time:

I'd hazard a guess that cutting one bundle of cards would take about a minute. That would allow for squaring up, making sure, fiddling a bit and making the cut to both sides.
So if they can cut 5 cards at a time you're looking at about 12 minutes work when you include setting up the guillotine.
If they can do the full stack at once it'll be more like 2 minutes including setting up.
You could then leave a buffer for things I've not thought about taking it up to 15 minutes.

Let's put the person's wage at £10/hour and ignore annoying things like operating costs and profit for the business, VAT, employer's NI contributions and so on...
That puts the cost on labour alone somewhere between 40p and £2.50.

That said I'd probably be happy with a price below £5 for having someone do the work... but I've made a lot of assumptions here and so it could be more. Maybe the stop on a guillotine is harder to set than I thought. Maybe the slippery finish on a decent deck of cards would mean they couldn't cut multiple packs at once. Things like that would bump the price up a bit.

Of course, I've not allowed for having the corners rounded again if you really want them looking natural. That'd probably be a DIY job unless the place you go to has the means to do it for you. Free if you can find someone nearby with corner clippers, £more if you can't.

Dunno if this helps, but hope it does.

.... to be honest, that's a figure that I had in mind

... I've already looked into a corner rounder - I'm prob gonna invest in one, no matter which route I end up going down with this. I've thought about this for a while now and I'm being drawn to buying the guillotine, so if anyone has any links to any suitable ones, it would be greatly appreciated :)
