Movies in which you have seen magic or mentalism effects?

Postby LoveKey1988 » Nov 8th, '11, 20:29

Hello people,

My passion is mentalism as well as magic and I like to see movies that have a magic trick in them or mentalism maybe.

Also Tv series.

I am also interested in movies and tv series that have con artists in them.

I already know Hustle, The Real Hustle, Leverage, The Mentalist, Psych, Lie to me.

Please make a list of movies and tv series that you can remember having a magic or mentalism effects in them.

Thank You very much.

Regards, Marian

Jonathan Creek has lots of magical references.

Anthony Hopkins performs the best card trick you'll ever see in a film called Magic.

In a similar vein to Dale's Columbo (which did at least two magic-themed shows, once with Jack Cassidy, once with Jeremy Irons), there were magic episodes of Hart to Hart and Charlie's Angels (many long-running detective shows seem to have featured magicians at least once).

A TV show no one ever seems to mention is Blacke's Magic from the 1980s, probably because it didn't last long!

The TV series Mission: Impossible often featured sleight of hand magic and sometimes items that had origins in stage illusions. There's a bit of magic in the first film too. The series was based on the idea of long cons.

The Doctor Who story The Talons of Weng Chiang features a Chinese magician (actually a white actor made up to look Chinese) who does a music hall magic act. The tricks are not "real" (as in they are not tricks that could be done in real life), at least not as far as I am aware!

The same applies to much of the magic in the old show "Ace of Wands", where camera edits were often used instead of sleights, but Ali Bongo was a consultant, so there might have been some real tricks in some episodes.

An episode of the kids' show Shadows featured a kids' magician who obtains some genuinely magic eggs that let him do truly impossible tricks. Again, the magic is largely of the TV show variety (done with camera tricks).

Films about cons that haven't been mentioned: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (itself basically a remake of Bedtime Story) and House of Games.

There was a TV show in Britain about 20 years ago called Perfect Scoundrels about a pair of con artists, but it's never had a DVD release (or even proper video release).

One of the Columbo ones was called Death by Illusion. Was the psychic one with the remote viewing experiment, or is that another one ? I have A Haunting We Will Go on DVD (i have most of the Laurel and Hardys). I remember the first time id seen it and was amazed it was the REAL Dante.

Theres also the X Files, with Ricky Jay and another fellow (i cant remember his name).

Terror Train, or something like that - a horror from the 70s with Jamie Lee Curtis - has David Copperfield playing the part of a magician. From memory he does some card manipulation, a levitation, cig through quarter, and the Floating Rose.
