Name for childrens magician..ideas please!

Postby Alfred Borden » Nov 10th, '11, 14:34

So after doing some card tricks at work I gained the nickname "Deanamo"

I can't come up with anything better, is this suitable for a childrens magician?

I don't like "Deanamo".

Houdini's name was chosen to refer to a great magician of a different era. Voodini (and Smoothini) and, er, Houdi-Elbow, chose names that remind people of Houdini. Having a name so close to a current working performer could come across like you're trying to ride on his coat tails. Or tracksuit hood. It's also not particularly suited for a kids' performer.

These things normally work best when they come from the performer, but how about Dean Keen (Keene or Keane)? Dean Keen is keen to make sure all the children have a party to remember. It's memorable because of the rhyme, says something about you as a performer, and includes a bit of marketing.

It could be Keen Dean, if you don't fancy adopting a stage surname.

Agreed with Part-Timer.
Deanamo sounds way too much like a rip-off. I wouldn't want to open every conversation with an explanation about why it's not an attempt to get bookings through someone else's fame but a nickname given by others... that is based on the name of the magician that it's not meant to be like.

Well Alfred sounds too formal-can't use that
Borden''some parents might know of Lizzie Borden--keep away from that

FIRST
1. How are you dressing?

2. Are you going to be a character? or just that straight often boring magician that many are!

3. What kind of personality are you OR will assume. Bright, Friendly, Mysterious, Funny etc

Then you can begin to look at:
The Old idea of Uncle ?
Someone with a name ending with 'ini' or similar

From Tipton--many years ago-- my wife created Mr. Tippi

The Mr. helped establish respect. The Tippi rollod off the tongue and was EASY to remember & easy to say.

PM me with your e mail address--and I will send you one of my Abra articles which details the aspects of the character I was assuming & how and which I selected

Interesting, and somewhat worrying the way some members on the forum think

Two very strange suggestions

Thanks to everyone else who contributed to the thread, Stacy, that is very clever, but again maybe lost on children?

Ace - quite like that as well

And Allen, thanks for contribution

And Part-Timer and Big Shot, kind of confirmed my doubts....

Do you know where the Dean of Pentacles comes from?

He's a wizard at the Unseen University. Well he's left now and is no longer Dean but the Arch Chancellor of Brazenose or something or other.

'Alfred the Great'
springs to mind, not maybe the most imaginative but I think it could work for the right persona (ie if things always go wrong for you).

I think it's important you choose something that reflects your style, also an adaptable name is very useful ; for example my name flash came from the George MacDonald Fraser books about Flashman the upper class bounder. This was when I played a villainous ringmaster in the circus. When I invented Phileas Flash I was an eccentric victorian style explorer. Then when I worked for kids abroad the character name reverted back to Flash or Flashy but the sinister side disappeared it was more about the fact he was a little slow on the uptake sometimes (but could have crazy moments of inspiration).

If you're going to do character work, find a character name that suits your character. If it's going to be a heightened version of you, that's what the name should be...

maybe!

oooh almost forgot; try to think of something that isn't also the name of a computer program (ie Flash) as this makes it very hard to get good google searches on yourself!!!! :D

What about just Al.

Then you get ... Wait fot it ... Wait for it ...

Macic Al ... Ie Magical .. I am magic al.

You could then do a nice sktech with the horrors if you was to
Have your name printed/painted somewhere. Ie no its magic al or no its magical which ever suits.
Kids love it when your wrong..

It would also be a nice re-inforcement of your name as your getting the kids brainwashed by repeating
It under the guise of entertainment ...
