Cup and balls

Postby themagicwand » Nov 18th, '11, 11:57

No, I haven't gone mad. I am still the dark lord. However my daughter (9 years old) has developed an interest in the cup and balls routine. She got s very small plasticy set in a Marvin's Magic set last Christmas. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a nice, easy to understand book on the Cup and Balls that a 9 year old could happily get on with? The Marvin's Magic instructions just outlines one move, and although I have garnered some knowledge over the years it has been deleted in my mind to make room for more darker nonsense.

TIA

Will track down the origins and get back to you later

It's a useless suggestion, but I'd love to see a 9 year old performing the Cellini/Gazzo style street cups.

There's a pretty good introductory routine broken down into easy to learn stages in an obscure text occasionally mentioned by the Mysterious One on these very boards- The Complete Course in Magic by one Mark Wilson. I sincerley hope that, having been a member of this forum for some time, you already own this book or else you may well get a visit from a certainly Lady to give you a kick in the shins!

Seriously though, it is a good routinue and at the very least teaches a whole bunch of different moves which you and your progeny could adapt to create a routinue of her own.

Just a thought :? why not dress up as Santa, do a small easy to understand routine, & record yourself
on dvd for her.She could maybe even have it on her phone.

yup, it's certainly worth looking at Mark Wilson's routine. It's a very nice routine and does give all the basics.

It should be in every magician's library, it contains all sorts of different types of magic so there's something for everyone. Also,it stops you from getting your shins kicked...

Thanks guys! I'm waiting to see how long this obsession with the cups and balls will last. It has some pretty strong competition from her Nintendo DS and Jacqueline Wilson books! If she's still into it after the weekend I may organise a trip to the local magic shop to invest in some half decent equipment. I've always fancied getting me a decent cup and balls routine, and this is the perfect opportunity.

There's a short simple routine in Classic Secrets of Magic by Bruce Elliott. It segues into three balls in hand.

That made me smile.

Gazzo's book does outline basic moves, but it may be too specific of a routine to start out with. His attention to detail is commendable though.

I'm at college, so I don't have it with me, but I think the Blackstone Book of Magic (or something like that) has a chapter on the cups and balls with lots of illustrations. That, along with Nick Einhorn's books, would be excellent to give your daughter as general magic books.

Currently Reading "House of Mystery" (Abbott, Teller), Tarbell, Everything I can on busking

I have the perfect routine for a nine year old with the plastic cups and balls. It is a pitch routine. And one of the few tricks that I sell to the public that kids can actually do. It is the standard routine that you do with the little plastic cups and is very effective. I am quite surprised that Marvin didn't include it in the instructions (unless he did). All the other routines that you read about are far too advanced for a nine year old.
