Props that replace objects you already carry

Postby Mr Grumpy » Nov 26th, '11, 13:34

You've gotta love props and gimmicks that replace objects you already carry. Partly because by definition they're going to seem natural and normal, but also because you're not taking up extra pocket space.

What are your faves?

Can anyone point out any I may have missed?

STUFF THAT REPLACES STUFF
-WALLET (JOL Plus); you gotta keep your money somewhere so why not use a wallet with inbuilt cleverness?
-ring flight KEYRING (David Bonsall's RFR is just perfect); again, you gotta have a keyring, so why not have a clever keyring?
-PENS (too many possibilities to list here, and mentioning some gimmicked pens is exposure)
-BUSINESS CARDS (eg Out to Lunch principle)
-LIGHTER/MATCHES/CIGARETTES (various gimmicks available)
-PADLOCK (locks your bag/case, but can be used for magic/mentalism)
-WATCH (various possibilities)
-HANKIES/TISSUES eg silks
-NOTEPAD with clever mentalist powers (impression pad)
-FOLDER/PORTFOLIO/POCKET DIARY eg Dean Dill's The Revelation; also I expect there are various impression folders out there?

ADDITIONAL STUFF THAT FITS IN WITH STUFF
-a PK RING (haven't got one at the moment); it's entirely normal to wear jewellery, and no pocket space required
-other JEWELLERY such as pendulum necklaces
-clever COINS/BANKNOTES (doesn't replace anything of course but does blend in and takes almost no space)
-KEYS such as haunted keys

STUFF THAT CAN BE GIMMICKED AND STUFF LIKE THAT SORT OF STUFF *shrugs*
-MOBILE PHONE with apps etc
-GLASSES (one mentalist -- anyone know the names? -- used to write chess moves around his specs so he didn't have to memorize them)

STUFF WHAT YOU WEAR
-JACKET (eg toppit)
-SHIRT (um?)
-HUMOUR-TIES FOR CLOWNING (?)
-TROUSUMS (I have a pair of combats with additional pockets to hold coins for easy stealing)
-GIMMICKED UNDERPANTS

I'll edit this post adding more when I remember them. I'm sure I have more than the above but am a tad hungover.

Those special notes or coins inside your wallet.
Having a natural looking notepad.

I have a hunted key attached to my normal keys for when I want to add something extra. I have a number of necklaces that I like to use as pendulums. Outlaws relic can be worn for this purpose and then also be used for which hand routines. In my wallet I have a coin unique, which hasn't been used in a while, but remains in there as it doesn't really take up much space.

For me having the outlaw hideout is essential. I use it as a regular wallet and it contains a 20 minute impromptu mind reading act.

Does anyone know of any kind of gimmicked padlock that can be used as a regular padlock, that perhaps they use to lock their briefcase or bag or whatever?

I have the Paul Brook Locked In Thought, but I'm not sure that counts as although technically speaking it functions as (and actually is, in a way) a regular padlock, I'm not sure I'd want to use it to lock anything valuable. It's not the most secure of padlocks. Maybe others disagree? And maybe there are other padlocks out there that can be used as a regular padlock?

An imp pad.
Also, a head full of routines that don't require secret gimmicks. Boring (for you), but true and effective.

Small wad of business cards ready for an Out To Lunch purpose. I usually wear a normal stainless steel ring which looks like the PK ring, if I need to PK anything I can change the rings over but I don't get all those annoying side issues such as 'wiping' hotel key cards or going into my pocket for change and coming out with assorted 'copper' coins clinging like limpets to my knuckles!

It's not magic but you can get Houdini Locks which are a puzzle, they work as real padlocks and you basically just hand the locked padlock with the key to somebody and ask them to open it. Its a lot more difficult than it looks.

On the topic of gimmicks to replace regular items how about a lighter? Don't smoke myself and barely use flash paper so haven't bothered but isn't there one called Branded? Put a light to your finger and named card is blistered into it

I think generally, not as props that replace objects you already carry, but existing items that are gimmicked, such as PK Sharpies or Empty by Marcus Eddie (I can't recommend this enough), which give extra usage but are still apparently props in themselves are great. As we all know, pocket space is minimal and like gold dust, so sometimes because we don't ALWAYS have the discipline to reset after an effect, or feel there would be extra heat on you when resetting in front of spectators means that you and your jacket and designated "magic" pockets is like traversing a mine field, performance sometimes is reliant on pocket management.

Also effects that can be combined to save the need for an extra prop or used in conjunction, such as peek wallets that function as both a peek and switch such as Showdown or, I presume Hideout, are fantastic tools. Plus the pockets could store packet effects, so it feels more organic than pulling out a plastic card wallet holder, almost impromptu, off the cuff, as if you saved it as an ad lib.

Impossible lock £24.99 at alakazam, or Deadlock £28.99 at merchant of magic.

No one has mentioned the various gimmicked watches that exist, many of which function as regular watches too. Sign of the times, I suspect, when people use their phones to tell the time.

Talking of which, there are some magical mobile phone apps that can be added to a normal phone (one or two of which sound pretty good). Not quite what you meant, but I think it fits the theme.

And what's wrong with a good old torn and restored tissue? It's not to be sniffed at.

If you are a bit old school and carry a handkerchief (or a bit more new school and carry a "do rag" or bandana), there are gimmicked versions of those.

Moving on slightly there are a number of magical items of clothing. There's even a gimmicked baseball cap, and tricks with gimmicked shoes/laces. You could even wear a Revelations t-shirt.

Hi there. I carry the new Filofax flex slimeline, a great alternative to a Heirloom wallet. Take a look at the Filofax flex I am sure it can be used for many different things. Best wishes
