My friend who loves having magic performed to him, text me last night to tell me this was on, I was busy at the time so recorded it

He texts me back a little while later telling me not to expect too much...I'm shocked by this as he loves magic...he said he enjoyed one trick - after watching the show I knew it would have been the ink on arm

After I text him about the show, he text me that I was a better magician and performer  - yes, I didn't take him too seriously as he is always generous with compliments about my magic ability but after watching I sort of got his point

Are you watching closely? Then I'll begin...

The thing that makes me laugh everytime there is magic on tv is a load of bitchy magicians who perform for their friends always pop up saying how much they hated it, how much better they are, how their friends all tell them how great they are...etc.
It's astonishing but magicians actually seem to HATE watching magic on tv, yet moan when there isn't any. Surely if all these keyboard warriors spent less time bitching and more time working on performing for other than their mates down the pub/school and showing a card trick at Aunty Betty's 80th then they would no longer feel the need to consistently put down anyone who is doing better than they are.

I personally thought it was an entertaining show, yes, from a magician's perspective it's quite obvious how many of these things were acheived, but it's not aimed at chin-scratching "aren't I clever" types but at the general public who wish to be entertained.

I caught the end of this show and saw them gargling molten lead. Interesting. I know how it can be done safely, though :(

If ratings count, then this show is a winner!

I enjoyed it.
Latimer's Laser show was just outstanding.
Would love a reference to the arm writing reveal. Is it published anywhere, or am I overlooking a simple move?

Lenny was OTT. This presenter is a boring autocue reader which is good as it puts the focus on the magicians.

There were some great tricks and some not so great ones. I felt that the laser show was one of the not so good ones.
The idea behind it is great, and I have seen some great versions. But it was either the lack of skill by Latimer, or the constant moving camera angles, ruined it a little.
I still enjoyed it though. I couldnt understand why anyone would phone up, as there was no real reason for a winner (unlike other phone in competitions, where the winners will return next week or all winners in a final show).

Still love Barry and Stuart.

I thought as a whole it was OK. I do think the so called celebrities did nothing to add to the show & felt using them as they did, they did nothing but limit the tricks that could be considered to the detriment of the magicians. The high point was the two young magicians at the end who were great & the low point was the so called looser's tasks. The obvious behind the back switch & the alleged molten metal poured into a wooden spoon with no effect on the wood was poorly thought out & performed, but not by the magician.
My 11 year old daughter who has no interest in magic, asked why they needed to get someone to check it was a real flame & then wondered why they put it out, before relighting one....Good question.

Since Jason invented the Laser as a solo piece, Its safe to say that its not a lack of skill. Like all magic, its supposed to be watched by a stationary viewer. Why the editing team insist on multi angles is beyond me.

Well obviously I love magic, but magic isnt something that translates well to TV anymore in terms of large effects. P&T mind you have a great vehicle idea (that also crosses genre into other professions) and the Beeb have some issue with this format of theirs by trying to mix both. No doubt they can see the beauty of it and it is very popular, the success of P&T they will be well aware of (and its international format sales that went well in Canne last year) but you can see they have serious misgivings about the format by ditching their primary host, pushing a live format and a new emphasis on the "live vote" which is a nightmare in terms of production but so many c*** (not the best) D's and AD's think it adds "frission". That is a lot of changes.
I'd also be betting heavily that the presenter is in for some serious talking to, I have a 12yr old who was asking why he wasn't talking properly. He's either got a great excuse that his autocue was on the fritz or he just froze up and couldn't' deal with things such as the talkback and presenting and reading. Darren McMullen normally is a bit better than that, check out his back stage vids, http://www.tout.com/m/x0z3m4 but I think the whole new show, new chance, and its live thing really got to him.
Also I know people like to knock the knockers and armchair warriors on the forum by saying how good magic looks now with this and will prosper, but if an 11yr old is asking why is the table is so thick it cant last forever until they get bored.

I saw this and had to switch off after a few minutes. So called celebrities I have never heard of doing magic when I would much rather watch magicians doing magic.

And Freddie, it is not sour grapes. I grew up with the Paul Daniels shows, so I guess I just expect something better when it comes to magic on television.

I think generally speaking the effects in isolation are fine. It's really the format itself that grates as it just seems bent on creating a mess of a show. It's tapas, when it should be Russian service.

Not sure what was going on with McMullen, but I got the impression they kept cuing him too early. He was bridging things with gags, as so he should, but every time he seemed to be halfway through the gag before the applause had died down and the audience's attention had moved back to the presenter. Nothing like a broadcaster dying on his a___ to unseat a show.

And on Latimer's laser manipulation act, I think the big moment is surely when he removes the beam from the stand. It was at this point that they decided to plump for an extreme long shot, so it was difficult to see what had actually happened.
