The only comments I have are whether you've considered adding something like vanishing crayons to the colouring book routine, which might help jazz it up if they've seen something similar at another party. The other things is whether you should be doing two tricks with silks, but not having them following each other. It might be a bit "and now let's go back to these beautiful handkerchiefs that I put away twenty minutes ago..." In some respects, I don't think it will matter, but it might flow a bit better if you either went from the opener into the Silk Tubes (but perhaps this isn't possible - I don't know the exact effects), or perhaps started with something like vanishing and producing a sponge ball, which then turns into a sponge rabbit. Similar to your planned opening, but with a surprise finish and the kids get to see a magician produce a rabbit. Kind of.

You raise some good points, part of the reason I post in such an honest, open fashion on here is because I well aware that there are people who have been performing for years and will be able to spot things like an odd sequence of tricks/routines etc

The exact effects are as follows, I open with a few words then start plucking stuff from the air, a red silk appears from my left hand, I then push it back in with the right hand and tell the children to scream and shout when they see the red silk again...I slowly open the left hand...it has vanished  ...I then pluck stuff from the air and the silk appears in my right hand.

Silk tubes - a red, yellow and green silk are placed into a see through plastic tube, I blow them into the air and they fly out and float to the floor, and are tied.

I am also planning some colour changing silks but have to work on some patter - a yellow and green 12" silk that changes into a red/blue silk

I thought that might be it; I know that trick as Crystal Tube, back from when I was knee-high to a grasshopper. It's a lovely visual effect and was one of my favourites, until I lost the spare "bits" and couldn't find suitable replacements.

I think it would be nice to tie these items together into a short routine at the start, but of course you need different silks for different bits. Could you perhaps slightly change these things so that they fit together? For example, the silk at the beginning is stretched into a bigger silk, which then changes colour. You take another red silk and a yellow one (say) and push them, one at a time, into a clear tube and they come out joined.

Another thought - could you tie in the appearing or disappearing colours from the colouring book trick with making silks appear or disappear?

After much thought, and some messing around with my Son, introducing the birthday silks might be a nice idea

Pulling out the black and white birthday silk, explaining that adding some colour would be nice, showing colour changing silks, green & yellow changing to blue & red, putting everything into a change bag, then pulling out the silk thats coloured with red, blue, yellow and green

My pleasure to help with ideas. Do let us know how the gig goes, when you do it, or if it's done already!

You would, of course, be competing with Gregory Popovich and completely mental pet theatre: http://www.comedypet.com/

Haha - Vegas is a great place, but I swear I would die due to party excess in about 6 months

Quick review of the gig as I have my notes with me today

1)Started with appearing then disappearing then reappearing red silk, its something I start with now as I encourage the children to make a lot of noise after the first time they see it, I tuck it into my left hand, then it vanishes  it then appears again in my right hand to much noise

2)Then went into letter routine (copyright Mark Lewis  ) and it went down a storm, I enjoy playing the village idiot/magician in trouble and the children love shouting out so works well! This then led into introducing the birthday girls onto the stage and into...

3)Birthday silks - with the use of some colour changing silks and a c**** bag we turn a black and white birthday silk banner into a colour one, going really well at this point!

4) Crystal silks - after watching the Silly Billy DVD I now make this a longer routine and it makes the finale very good. Always goes down well and one of my favourites

5) Crown jewel with die box - I actually messed this trick up as when I asked a girl to help me out and was going through my patter about the Queen and the crown jewel, I took the jewel off the top but as I triggered the gimmick I hadn't covered well enough with the silk I was using  Was gutted as it was a bad mistake and the girl took great pleasure in telling everyone it was there!

6) Colouring book - I now borrow a little from a couple of DVD'd I have watched and have the children picking colours off their clothes to colour the book in, then have them take the colours back...and the nice twist, insisting that they leave the book coloured at the end as you try and back off the stage....the children can't help but to grab the colours back again so we have the fun of an empty book then another round!!

7) Multiplying wands - into appearing flower boxes...this actually didn't get a great reaction, maybe because I let a boy help out and he wasn't that impressed with flowers of boxes appearing from a bag! Some of the children enjoyed though and were really trying to check the bag

8) Breakaway wand..into linking ropes. The linking ropes is fast becoming my favourite part of the act and always goes down well - the effect being that me and the volunteer have some fun with throwing rope rings over one anothers head, the child then throws them into the air and they are linked!

9) ID routine - My wife suggested this might work so I included it, it was a good chance to get a lot of children involved with the act. One child comes onto stage and picks a card, I reserve the card (no-one sees it) and the child guards the box. I then threw a foam brick around and different children picked the colour/suit/card - it worked well but not as great as I thought it might have been

10) Snake in basket - finished with the birthday girls picking a card each which was found by the snake in the basket who also took the liberty of signing them!

When I saw my boss at work next he told me how much his daughter enjoyed it as did her friends

Needless to say I had a couple of drinks that evening

Thanks to everyone on the forum for their support and the kind PM's. Its what sets this forum apart from others
