What sort of effects would be good for doing in a loud club?

Postby magicman98 » Feb 2nd, '12, 23:03

I was thinking of doing some effects in a loud nightclub/rave but it would be quite loud in there and kind of hard to see. There will be lots of people about so it will be crowded and i thought you could do things close-up.

I thought dresscode would be a good one because it's quick and visual. It's small but packs big.

Any other suggestions about effects, anything really. They would need to be quick or visual, easy to see etc.

I don't know if the odd coin trick or cards would be any good.

I can't speak that well anyway so people won't be able to understand me that much because of all the background noise, and hard to see, dark, strobe lights etc.

Any suggestions appreciated

Many thanks 8) :) 8)

Use a writing pad

Write your messages or use prepared messages on a writing pad instead of shouting them,
Big black marker-pen messages such as:-

Hello I'm a magician
pick a card
cut the pack
shuffle the pack
wow, how did he do that ?

great for predictions if your routine flips through the steps in sequence and the last page is the prediction.

also....
noisy innit ?
you are nice. can I buy you a drink ?
etc.

In Swansea 90% of my income, if not more, came from nightclub chains. Metal bending was all I did when inside.

not Flash paper. If its dark, or crowded you will find a bouncers hand on your shoulder. Remember, you cant smoke in a club any more.
If you use flash products, reserve their use for the smoking areas only, where it's going to be quieter.

Visual magic, that requires little in the way of explanation is the way to go.
A.C.R,for example. cardwarp, and signed card to wallet, also need little explanation.
you also have the effects using finger rings.
sponges are always worth using as the plot is simple.
saw, as Freddie sugested is visual... but you can only do it once, before slipping off to the loo for a reset.
And thats another thing worth remebering.
You will get people comming up and saying.." ear mate, show im that thing you did wiv the....." It wont look good if you say " sure, Ive just got to pop to the gents for a couple of minutes.. dont go away".
so...look for Instant reset in the description. :)

May I suggest "drinking" and "snogging girls". Two excellent routines I can heartily recommend. From what I remember...

If so, please PLEASE check with the management that this is OK and they know you're going to do it! Otherwise your club magic career could end rather quickly.
I used to do a lot of card magic in loud clubs, if you can't hear people well enough it's easy enough to sign things like "pick a card" or "look at the card"; you can then go into an ACR or Card to Pocket or some kind of flash reveal (hot shot cut?) easy enough.

I would also second D'Lites; I've worked my way through a few sets of the red/green colour changers in my time.

What kind of club are we talking? Dance? Rock? Jazz?

It'll be in a dance club so there will be lots people dancing away.

I thought of doing dresscode as it's quick and visual.

keybender as it's a good little metal bending trick.

Maybe a coin vanish or coins across in the hands.

Maybe a bill change when I'm paying for a drink etc with a well secret gimmick (i don't like to give things away, I respect the art way to much)

Or if you had a bottle you could make it appear from nowhere, just a thought.

Cards would be allright if they were easy to see, maybe UV light cards, black tigers or something.

Things that would grab somebody's attention, like attention grabbing effects, things that draw them in and make them want to see more.

Things that you could on your own accord when your ready. spur of the moment tricks easy reset. (I don't know how you could reset dresscode easily, could you do it on the spot with a bit of misdirection or would you have to go away because the worst thing i would want to have to say is i just need to pop to the toilet or something. You can't go away otherwise you'll lose them and they can't wait around. :) :) :)

You could combine marketting with Dress Code.
Have a t-shirt that reads something like "ask me for a card trick" then dress code into a reveal

Just thinking out loud really.

I personally agree with Paul. My earlier post was relating to paid performances ;)
