When I used Dragon Thread I had several small skeins of silk sewing thread.Sylco. It's a few years back but I think it was embroidery thread.
Is there no little shop near you which sells cottons etc..There often is and you could ask to see which breaks easiest.

Later I went back to the original methods of Hindu/Gypsy thread for which you use Chadwick's Mending cotton.

I've found it difficult to get hold of the Chadwick's thread (at least on line and there is none available in my area) but regular tacking thread can work just as well. http://www.sewessential.co.uk/CategoryM ... 100&page=1

John Lewis stores used to stock it but haven't done so for a couple of years, House of Fraser stores still stock Chadwick's in the Midlands Area, try Selfridges or other allied stores where they still have a Haberdashery Department, knitting and sewing shops will also be able to offer Chadwick's or something equally suitable. If you get funny looks from the salesladies, just tell them you're doing an initiative test as part of joining the Freemasons - it worked for me very well indeed and the saleslady promosed she wouldn't tell anyone I'd been in there buying the stuff  ! As it's not all that easy to break I light a small candle which not only adds to the atmosphere a little, but is useful to burn the thread apart.

Morrowsean: You also have a look at Gypsy Thread--Talk Magic Forum 2009 (sutra298016.php).May give you some ideas

And the magician who asked, in the Gypsy Thread posts-- how do I keep all the references--were they in files on shelves?
Alas--no. Mainly in my head. I have read avidly since I was a small boy. Memory developed through many years of Theatre-- You develop a way of learning lines quickly.
And since using a computer in Jan 2002-- if I research any effect for the young (& older) magicians round the world--then I do save all the material I uncover in a PC file.

I also have my 250 video tapes indexed on lists.
