I'm assuming that anyone posting in this thread will know the wider story which has been posted and publicised in many places over the last two weeks or so. If so you will also understand that, apart from the legal aspects which may or may not be involved, there’s also the human element whereby people have been very deeply and seriously upset, careers possibly put in jeopardy – all of which does magic no good at all. TM doesn’t want to be seen to be joining in the people bashing aspect which has cropped up elsewhere and that’s why there have been posts stressing the need for caution as well as more than a few edits/deletions. This has nothing to do with stifling free speech and everything to do with not inflaming an already volatile situation.

We've had PMs asking to keep this thread open, with allowance for normal policy editing and moderation, of course, and, although we’ve never done this before, to preserve the integrity of the thread from wildcat or inflammatory posts, it will be locked when all the Mods go offline and unlocked as soon as possible when moderating can resume. If new threads are created to get around this safeguard then please expect the worst.

As the original title of the thread was to do with Wizard Product Review then let’s keep to that remit please. My fourpenn’orth is that WPR is simply a publicity oriented webcast, aimed at a relatively specific market, where two working professionals give their opinion on various tricks, effects and so on. This is nothing like the Reviews on forums like TM where those who review have (mostly) saved up and bought the item with their own money and with the intention of using it in their hobby or part time Magic activities. WPR is not the Holy Grail, the words were not passed down from the Almighty for everyone to receive in awe and wonder. The Magic world existed very well before WPR and it’ll carry on equally well after it’s gone. It served several purposes but perhaps now is the time to put it to rest. In any event, the future of WPR is in the hands of those who own and run it so there’s not much that anyone else can do.

The Wizard Product review

Postby Mancunian Lee » Feb 22nd, '12, 14:47

Just spoke to Mark at World Magic Shop when placing an order. He confirmed that its back next week with David and Craig and its sticking with its usual format.

He was saying that people at Blackpool were saying they want it to stay as it is and not to change the format, so they are listening to fans and its back next Wednesday.

I reckon they should strip it back a bit & get it back to how it started, a proper review show. I think it got caught up in being succesful & outgrew itself. Bit like top Gear with the catchphrases & predicatable injokes. The last 6 months were more of an effort to watch. Good on them for bringing it back though, must take some guts & i'll expect all eyes will be on them.

While I kind of liked them having fun with what they do, they've gotten into a bit of trouble for simply praising gimmicks and for botching a few effects. I do hope that this time, Craig actually goes through performing Kevin Parker effects for live people and wonder if this show will be somber or will be more upbeat and lively.

Apparently this is back next week (29/2/2012) looking at the Youtube channel.
Good what an overblown tiff. I know the guys go too far with their criticisms (Alakazam news is so much much more civil) but I did think the same as them about the squeeking routine. Unfortunately for them quite a few people were waiting for them to trip up.
Best thing is to get up, dust down and carry on. (How British is that).

Regrettably this was more than just a tiff and there are still some serious issues unresolved.

All I want is for them to get back on their game. It was fine for them to have some fun with the show but at times they would often go off on a tangent and rant, and other time's it got a bit boring when they would flub certain effects and over hype others. I personally would like to see them change their format and instead of showing this or that new effect to each other, maybe they have a segment where they perform it for actual spectators (even if the effect is a pile of poop.) then they could have the spectator explain what they thought of it. It wouldn't be too hard, because we have seen them test out effects on people before.

I hope they've learned that you can't just say what you like and broadcast it to the world.

I think this has less to do with them bad mouthing people and more to do with the legal issues behind what David Penn did. But really I would like them to stop bashing people, Yes we know Kevin Parkers effects have been godawful and some of the others they've shown have been c*** (not the best). The problem is that they sometimes don't balance out why something is c*** (not the best) (Although I can understand the can and fruit production.. making a gimmick that can pretty much accidentally cause you slice your hand open is pretty damn stupid. and the necklace one looked kind of... lame.) But I would like them to actually get around to performing for actual spectators.

I've had a PM making the point that, if WPR is back so soon in the same format with the same presenters then how does that fit with the Facebook apologies made only earlier this month of:
David Penn wrote:My personal involvement in the Wizard Product Review has come to end in light of recent events.
and
Craig Petty wrote:I am going to take a break from WPR for the time being to reflect on recent events.

You know, that's a good question. I supposed they realized the show must go on, but then them saying they are "quitting" (which lasted maybe 2 weeks or so.) is kind of silly. You can't quit something and then just come back like nothing happened. I guess we will see tomorrow if they do some long episode apology or if they carry on. It's sort of a weird situation and technically they could still do the show, just have Mathew and somebody else do it. I mean it's not like that sort of thing hasn't happened with Talk Show's in the past or even TV series's.

Just watched the show, they aknowledged their previous apology & admitted they screwed up. There's a couple of changes to strip the show back to basics a bit like not awarding worker of the week to average products & hopefully cutting the injokes & scetches out. They announced giving 2 kids free magic & tutoring for a year which is nice but other than that they got on with reviewing. I do like the suggestion on here of real life performances to lay people & don't think it's too far fetched, they could film 4 effects in an hour & spread them over 4 shows.

If they keep the basic show I think it'll keep building the viewers, I just hope they don't take their eye off the ball again & slip back into scetches & reviews in the minus figures.
