I've been wanting to design a tarot deck for a while but haven't managed to come up with a good concept yet. I want it to be something slightly quirky, shame I didn't think of an Urban deck.

A Steampunk tarot might be interesting.....

I've got the idea for something more surreal in mind, something more Daliesque could be fun. I just need to find the time to do the artwork...

I like the look of the urban tarot. Not a deck I could see myself using for readings though.

Don't know if you already know the Dali universal deck already Lady of Mystery. Some sources put them as all painted by Dali, while others say just a few of the cards were done by the man himself. Its a fairly ugly looking deck on the whole, a few nice twists on the Rider Waite designs though.

Just a nod to the Steampunk Tarot, I pre-ordered a copy off Amazon and I got it last weekend and it is georgeous.

Must stop buying Tarot decks.

Is there a vampire tarot?

Lots of vampire ones out there and all fairly horrible, but certainly popular. I think I've seen at least one vamp deck in waterstones.

Most of these decks are largely just for collecting; you would have to think carefully before using them for a reading.

I do not like the urban tarot. The images look ugly and uninspiring to me. I cannot imagine doing a reading with them. Some of the other decks on this thread though are quite nice.

I tend to favour the Rider Waite, but might look at some of the gothic ones some day.

I've only actually got one deck that I'd ever use for readings and that's a rather tatty deck that came in a Learn Tarot set that I bought when I was about 14.

I've got quite a few other decks but I only buy those because I love the artwork or I find them particularly interesting. Freddie, Carry on Tarot, I love that!!! That really does have to be done.

Someone should do a basics tarot where each card has the name, a small illustration and then the majority of the card is made up of text describing what it's supposed to mean so that beginners can start messing around with the cards without having to flick through a book for each card. If you didn't bother with the illustration, you could save money but not having to pay someone to come up with original artwork for them. They'd probably be pretty cheap to produce and if you got a bunch of experienced tarot workers to sit down and agree on the actual texts, you'd have a pretty cool set for newbies to practice with.
