because the world is just * mental!

Because our skin colour is who we are. Our clothes are a choice. This guy chose to come on stage at a prestigious event in sneakers, with his shirt hanging out.

And you judged him based on this.

Did anyone watch Britain's Got Talent winners Diversity on the Royal Variety? They came on stage IN HOODIES!!!! Hoodies!!! In front of the Queen!!!
How the hell dare they where street clothes on such a prestigious event! Boo them, I say, Boo them.

But they weren't tatty or scruffy.

I'll mention a name... Yann Frisch

No shirt, just a t-shirt, that's not tucked in; and "just out of bed" hair, I bet he even has sneakers on under that table!

I'm quite sure almost endless lists of names supporting both points of view could be compiled. Siegfried and Roy were hardly dressed down on stage, Channing Pollock, Lance Burton ditto. David Blaine was completely different but certainly didn't look scruffy, even Criss Angel went to opposite levels but still presented an attention grabbing appearance. What bemuses me is why so many of the big box illusionists on the club and theatre circuits seemed to dress alike - Long leather coats, perhaps leather trousers, dark shirts - all designed to give that mysterious dark persona while waving the hands about and the lovely assistant did all the hard work!

It's been mentioned that looking like a clown isn't good but if you are appearing as a clown then surely it's quite appropriate? Clothes can certainly maketh man (and woman) and your appearance is the first thing specs will see and take note of.

I'm still not convinced about that white suit and red turtle neck.... :?

A good example is Gary Glitter. When dressed up in silver jumpsuits with shoulder pads he was everywhere with number one records coming out of every orifice. Now he wears scruffy clothes and has a tatty beard you hardly every hear of him.

Point proven.

Was he mainly a stage performer, or close-up/walk-around? It might work, if the former, it's probably no worse than the leather trousers brigade Mandrake mentioned. Come to think of it, maybe that's not an argument in favour of "the man in the white suit". Also, I think you might be mixing up "smart and presentable" with "tasteful" or "fashionable". :P

Yup. Because it's a choice, exactly as Tony said. I am sure Tony couldn't care less how the bloke dresses in his own time; the point is he chose to come on stage looking a mess.

Be honest, Lawrence... do you need a Lord Freddie makeover? Kitsch eye for the hairy guy?

I'm quite fond of this sort of look:
http://www.charlotteward.net/wp-content ... tardis.jpg" target="_blank
as a costume when performing (I'm not nearly young enough to go with "street" yoof clothes) and I'm not convinced that trainers are a problem as long as they aren't really filthy.
These trainers:

Are especially marvelously bling with a suit

Have you seen what I look like (I'd be judged by TonyB I'm sure!)? Freddie would be in heaven giving me a makeover! Maybe we can make an event of it at a northern tab.

Seems to be general feeling that those trainers would really be letting you down! :D :D

The shirt would really be letting me down. Though with a dozen of us wearing them we look slick, like Diversity all wearing hoodies I guess :D
Sadly I won't be out to play on Saturday; I'm up in Newcastle looking after a friend who's due to give birth soon.

Better get my hair and beard trimmed too before Tony really passes judgement!
