History of magic...

Postby Magus » Jul 5th, '12, 05:30

...or a history of modern magic.

I know the famous (television) magicians and the odd not so famous magician that has been referenced in a book that I read. I know there was a chinaman that wasn't a chinaman that died catching a bullet and a fellow that was fairly good at escaping from his manacles but that is pretty much it!

Obviously this is a fairly large subject but is there a good book that documents a brief history of magic please? I like to know a little bit about the subject that I'm studying.

Thanks in advance.

Shaun.

I thoroughly enjoyed Hiding The Elephant by Jim Steinmeyer, which amongst ther things contains a potted history of the usage of mirrors in stage illusions.

start with Milbourne Christophers The Illustrated History of Magic .( shop around on line, there are many out there.. some for silly money)
then decide on an area that you wish to study. Its a huge and diverse subject that can make you spend serious money in the pursuit of facts. :)

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

"Paul Daniels and the Story of Magic" by John Fisher is pretty good; there are cheap second-hand copies about.

Aza, Really--I ma just a very ordinary person who happens to have the good fortune to :
PERFORM a lot of Magic
READ a lot of Magic Books.
SEE a lot of Magicians & Magic.
KNOW or MEET a lot of magicians-many of them famous.
LOVE HELPING/ADVISING magicians on their Magic. It is the teacher, which was born in me, that does this.

and I have loved and been passionate about Magic since the age of 9.

VICTORIAN MAGIC
Wll Victorian Magic by Geoffrey Lamb--this was published for the General Public but is very informative..ASK you local library if they can get you a copy to borrow.
The Great Illusionists by Eddie Dawes. Published by Chartwell Books originally and in the UK by David & Charles..1979. This is a brilliant book on Magic's performers and nealry half of it deals with Mas=gic from the early Victorian perios to Houdini's death in 1926,
As Eddie Dawes is possible the greatesrt authority on Magic History in the UK and ranks very, very high in the whole world--get it.
It is full of photographs, engravings and illustrations as well AND MOST IMPORTANT--Very easy to read.

There is a good number of 2nd. hand copies around

I was thinking the same thing myself. I'll have a go but, as I'm away again for a week after Sunday it'll have to be when I get back.
