Today I have been mostly buying...

Postby Magus » Jul 22nd, '12, 23:31

Coming to the end of another 2 months offshore so I have started buying myself a few treats for when I get home. Along with Bobo, Mark Wilson and a couple of other books I have bought,

My first Svengali deck in red bikes. Totally new to svengali so if anybody can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

The 3d Sponge Rabbits. Only having concentrated on cards so far as I delve into other disciplines I would like to look at sponge balls. I thought I would go straight for these instead. They got good reviews when they first came out so I figured I couldn't really go wrong with them?

Depends on what you want from it really. Sven's are at their best if they fly below people's radar, i.e. you don't do the "pitch" routines with them. You can use the deck to force a card in a very fair seeming manner, which is enough of an effect on its own, but could get you one ahead for something more impressive (just remember that you don't have to reveal your hits in order!).

By shifting or otherwise removing a single card you can have each force card be at either an odd or even position, which has some potential...

You can also have some fun with a Sven by not using it as a Sven - separate out the force cards and use them as a conventional forcing bank.

If you learn to faro, you can hand the spec the indifferent cards to shuffle, while you shuffle the force cards. Depending on how they shuffle the indifferent cards, you can then swap halves before faroing the deck back together again.

If you are interested in the pitch style routines you could do worse than take a look at Mark Lewis' The Long And The Short Of It. A promising manuscript from a refreshing up-and-comer.

Simon Scott

If the spectator doesn't engage in the effect,
then the only thing left is the method.

Pretty standard with a sven deck here. Get a spectator to 'pick' a card, I like the getting them to stick their finder in the deck while you are flicking through it, especially for younger people (kids) then get them to look at the card, stick it anywhere in the pack and either cut the cards a few times and 'move' their card to the top or simply go down the ambitious card route and hay presto, it 'jumps' to the top. And maybe add that you are going to turn the entire deck into their 'chosen' card and then (after doing a bottom steal) flick through the card again (face up) showing the deck has magically turned in to only their card. I never reverse this and turn it back to being a 'normal' deck though unless I am going to do a deck switch and allow them to examine the deck because people often want to look at the deck after this. I am no sven expert its not a deck I use often so feel free to ignore me!

Magic is real, just look around you, some of the most amazing things have no reason, no explanation but are very real.

Hi there. Remember doing a great trick with the Svengali deck to my work buddies many years ago, you may have to do a 24 hour prep, but well worth the end result.... Basically send the chosen card to your work place or were ever you are performing the trick by post, and make sure the letter is made to the person you are doing the trick for a better jaw breaking effect.. Then force that card to then and present them with there letter with there own name which will be dated the day before on the letter, so you get the effect of a card sent by post the day before which matches there chosen card.. Sadly this trick will only work well if you working at a everyday location etc.. But still a great effect.

I don't know if this is in any books anywhere ( I didn't even read the instructions that came with the deck ) but I was recently playing with a Svengali deck and realised that if you move your hand in a constant sweep as you dribble them to a table you get what looks like a spread but has all the cards dropped in pairs, the top of each pair being the force card, so you can ask someone to reach out and touch a card, pull it towards them, and it seem like the fairest selection imaginable.

Takes a bit of practise but looks very nice.

Have fun with the sponge bunnies and if you haven't have a look at getting yourself a giant bunny too. I think it makes a lovely and suprising end to a routine when all the little bunnies that you've produced suddenly turn into one big one.

Many thanks for the advice and replies as always. It is going to be a couple of weeks before I actually get the svengali deck so I'm not 100% on it although I have a pretty good idea how it works. I'm looking forward to having a play with it.

Rebecca, do you know who sells the giant bunnies and are they the same as the other 3d ones?

Rebecca, thank you for the help, I'll have a look on C4M. Of course I may as well find something else to buy at the same time. Only to take advantage of the postage of course... :D

CArl, thank you. That looks just the kind of thing that will get me off on the right foot. :)

Sponge rabbits are not instead of sponge balls, the should be as well sponge balls. There is no doubt that the rabbits are a great trick, probably the trick I get asked for again more than any other, but a good sponge ball routine so far as I am concerned caan go in to the sameset as the rabbits. I use both, often at the same table
