If the bands keep rolling off then try using a smaller size. Number 19's are suggested but its possible to get No 18s and No17s from Staples stores. Also, make sure the two upper fingers are clamped firmly and the band stretched significantly so they are kept under your control rather than zooming off into orbit. I've lost quite a few by not keeping the bands under control but so far I've only hit our dog with one. Now she keeps well away if she sees me with a rubber band.
As Mandrake set, you should try different sizes. But, if you have normal sized fingers (what is that? ) i would suggest using 19. My experience says that 19 is the best size, at least for my fingers....
Strangely enough, I went out and bought both 18s and 19s today from Staples for comparison - 99p each for a 1/4lb bag. Just go give them a try.
Ah... CMH... it got me a girl once - she worked at a job agency and I showed her and her colleagues while I was being interviewed. Let's just say I was 'on the job' more than once as a result...
Some people may also find the process easier than others due to being able to bend the thumb back at 90 degrees at the end. I think less than a third of people are able to do this (I can and imagine that I would find CMH alot harder if i couldn't) and unfortunately it is something you are vorn with and can't practice.

Nick, you should be in a circus!
My thumbs don't even bend back 1 degree, but having said that I have never had a problem with CMH (It got the thumbs up from Michael Ammar), so I guess bendy opposable digits doesn't really come into it. I think this one is just down to ptactice, but if there was ever something worth while practicing, this one is it...
Assuming you don't lose or break them, they ought to last for ages. I've found that the 18s and 17s tend to become a little sticky if left on a table or somewhere for a few days - probably the natural rubber breaking down or something but the 19s are still OK after 9 months or so in the box. Other than that, perhaps a little talc or French chalk to keep them dry and happy and they should last you several weeks at least.
I'm not being funny, but I'm far from rich and don't worry about how long my elastic bands last - a 1/4lb bag of size 19s from Staples is 99p. If I get through them all in a month, which I NEVER will, it's not a huge price to pay, is it?
