Magic Shop Blackpool

Postby Johnny Wizz » Sep 20th, '12, 12:59

Just on the off chance i have missed something in my searches does anyone know of any magic shops in Blackpool. I know that JB is now online only and the only other one I have come across is Tommy Cooper but that seems to have disappeared as well

I know we've covered this question before and I believe it was quite recently - can't find the thread, sorry! Anywho, I think the answer was that JB and Tommy Cooper's were the only ones. Ironic that the town which hosts the biggest magic Convention on the planet each February doesn't seem to actually have a magic shop.....

EDit: Google shows a Magic Wand shop - http://magicwandshop.co.uk/3.html, but not really 'conjuring' stuff. Illusuoncraft are showing an address of 12 Taybank Avenue, Blackpool; Tommy Cooper's is listed as being at Royal Oak Buildings Waterloo Rd Blackpool FY4 2AB. Moving the goalposts a little there's always Taurus Magic at 32, Pilling Lane, Preesall, Poulton-Le-Fylde, Lancashire, FY6 0EU.

Thanks Mandrake, I was really just casting around in case something new had opened. The irony was not lost on me vis a vis the Convention and the strength of the Blackpool Magic Club not being enough to support a shop in town.

I saw the Magic Wand shop. Looks a bit hippy open toe sandal knit your own yoghurt sort of stuff to me :)

There WAS The House Of Secrets--opposite Central Pier.

But as the owner (his name has slipped m memory) died not long ago--it may not be there.

The best person to ask is Derek Lever. E mail him

... the days when you could get fish and chips for 1/6 on the prom or even for 1/3 from the chippies further away from the prom. Note to those who have no idea about £ s d, those sums convert to 7.1/2p and about 6p in today's mickey mouse money.

I think I was there when decimalisation was in but not by much. I left Blackpool in the late seventies.

Feb 15th 1971 was Decimal Day and the fish and chips have increased in price ever since!

As for the Blackpool Magicians Club not being enough to support a shop that lot never bought a thing anyway. Old Murray once told me that if he had to rely on the local magic club he would starve. Oddly enough I found that to be the case in Dublin too where I had a magic business. And in Toronto too the local magic clubs do not support the two magic shops in town to any great degree.

I still remember the time that Herb Morrissey was asked to countersign a regular customer's application to the local IBM ring. He agreed to do it but said, "Once I do this and you become a member I will never see you again"

And guess what? He was right!

Book Library in the club (no need to buy books anymore!!)
DVD library in the club (no need to buy DVD's anymore !!)

A member shows someone a trick, person says "Where did you get that from? I'll buy one" member says "No need to buy it, I'll show you, then you can make it up yourself!!

Or they get it from the bloody internet! I think you have to be very brave to be a magic dealer nowadays. What with the recession and the internet only the fittest will survive. And the latter is a bigger danger than the former. The recession will eventually go away but the internet never will. May God have mercy on your soul if you are a brick and mortar magic shop.
