En Masse Magic...HELP!!!

Postby dgmagic » Oct 4th, '12, 17:47

Hi Guys,

Got a gig next weekend and the client wants something that can be done on all fifty members of the audience all at the same time!

I'm thinking the effect where the magician shows everyone how to lock their arms but when the magician asks that everyone straightens
their arms only he can do it (apologies, but I don't know the name of this effect would appreciate it if someone could tell me what it
was called).

Could anyone point me in the right direction of any effects (parlour, stage, etc) that I could do that would involve at least 15 members of
the audience if not all?

Thank You in Anticipation of Your Kind Responses,

dgm

The new dvd from Big Blind Media is on Multiple Revelations and had a very good review on this weeks wizard product review, might be worth a look.

dgmagic,

Couldn't you do a mathematical card trick whereby you give out some cards to members of the audience and get them all to follow your instructions?

As you don't have much time to learn i would suggest something that only uses a few cards....

Much love

Hi Relish,
I actually do a Fireworks (Aldo Colombini) inspired multiple selection routine but hadn't thought of it for this situation. I've heard good things about this DVD featuring Andi Gladwin and Co. Thanks for that!

Hi Aza,

What kind of mathematical trick did you have in mind? Please PM me if not appropriate for an open forum.

Bob cassidy used to start his act by sending thoughts to the entire audience. He'd get people to think of something outside. Then he'd get people to think of something inside. Then he'd state what he was trying to send and ask people to put their hands up if they received it. Most of the audience always put their hands up. I haven't seen him do it for ages but here is a clip of it in action:

Woody Aragon has some great ideas for the whole audience.

On his new DVD and in his book he has a trick called "Finding The Other Half" (or something similar), where all members of the audience get 4 playing cards each, shuffle them, tear them, put half of one card aside as a prediction) swap some of them with other members of the audience, throw some away, mix some more then keep throwing away cards until they are left with just 1 half, that half matches the half they previously put aside. All members of the audience can make different choices than each other throughout.
I perform this and it is really fun. It fooled me when reading the instructions in the book.

Just on his DVD he has a trick which is more of a joke, but it is really really good. And a hilarious opening trick. All members of the audience can partake in this, and can all make slightly different choices.
I don't want to describe what happens just in case you ever get to see it performed... It won't blow anyones mind, but will make the audience laugh, and is one of the best (most enjoyable and entertaining) openers i've seen. I've used it, and will continue to use it. This trick requires no props, just the spectators hands.

I very highly recommend these 2 effects.

Hi Kevmundo,
Liked the Bob Cassidy clip! Could have some fun with that once I can work out the method!

Hi FTHO,
Woody's book is awesome, isn't it? I know the trick you refer to but don't really want to do that for an audience of 15 or more. Which of Woody's DVD's are you referring to? Quite interested in the trick you're hinting at! Is it really as impromptu as it sounds?

Yes the book is awesome, Look out for Ramon Roiboo's new book (Thinking the Impossible), its similar, perhaps simpler stuff, but all very good.

The DVD I'm referring to is the set recently released by the essential magic collection: "Woodyland" - link below.

Does Woody have other DVDs?

I think the other half trick could work really well with a large audience of 15 or more, but not always... apparently woody uses it in his shows.

Are you aware that Woody is lecturing in London this November? at the London Festival of Magic...
He is also doing a lecture for Penguin Live. on 7th October: http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/2883

Perhaps he will explain the trick i mentioned during the Penguin lecture. Is your show before then?

You'll find the Cassidy effect in one of his books, I think it's in Artful Mentalism but I've not got them to hand to check for sure. There's also something similar in Banachek's Psychological Subtleties 1.

Hey FTHO,

Thanks for your reply. Met Woody at FISM and will be hopefully meeting him again in November! Can't wait, he is such a nice guy! I am aware of 'Woodyland' but he also has two other products out, 'Bumblebees' and the 'Card Puzzle'. I believe Ramon's book is awesome so will be putting that on the Christmas want list!

Thanks for all your suggestions Guys, I'm finding this a great help!

By the way, woody demonstrates the effect i mentioned in his penguin live lecture. You can buy it for $25 or so. A lot cheaper than buying his 4 DVD set.
