Billet I.

Postby Samba » Nov 18th, '11, 02:12

Hello,

I'm gonna abbreviate some words for this, but anyway, I have a Q5 built already from Corinda's instructions. It works well for cards and blank cards, however.... I'm looking for an everyday small sized billet I. which can hold a good number of outs ( about 12, although 10 is good enough ) .... Its preferable if it can hold a folded billet as opposed to a flat open billet. ( Thus the size is much smaller ), but that's not a big necessity . I've seen the matchbook I. somewhere, but the man hunt for those was not successful. ( Hotels have them I think ) ... but also the outs are only 5 in those.

Also I don't mind any DIY stuff.

Thank you,

The index that I use is in my Murder in Mind book, it's a variation on Corinda's index that I find works really well for me and holds upto 12 billets.

In 'Practical Mental Magic' on page 78 it shows you how to construct a billet index that can hold up to 52 predictions. I presume you could adapt the construction to work with less billets. I seem to remember another index in there which was a small wooden block with holes drilled in which held I think 10 (more or less) rolled up billets. I can't remember the name of the effect or the page number though.

Edit : The wooden index can be found on page 195 of the 'Encyclopaedia of Card Tricks'.

I can't recall who it was that was making them, I want to say Paul Stockman but I'm uncertain, but they were producing a nice vinyl version of the index based on the Corinda Index. There' likewise the system developed by Looch that's top notch and ridiculously simple that's become quite popular with several major names out there. I'm likewise fond of the VERSADEX Wallet put out by Larry Becker some years ago.

I believe Looch has a new version coming out some time soon. I'm sure it will be limited so keep an eye out for it.

Daniel Madison had a great idea for index, you can check his 'Advocate' pdf. It's designed for a pack of cards, but it can easily be adapted to just billets: smaller or bigger number of them.

I'm looking for an index which fits in my top jacket pocket. So it should be shorter than 12 cm. Anyone uses such an index ?

Thanks !! :)

That's an odd placement. . . unless you mean the inside top pocket.

You should look at card magic, there are some awesome hold-outs of this sort used by card workers, especially those that have limited use of one arm; the late Johnny Paul had an amazing indexing system that held a full deck and he could pull any card (while switching) in a split second.

Fact is, you may have to experiment and create your own, using thin but stiff card stock at first; until you have a system you're comfortable with. Then you could get a leather or plastic's worker to make you the real deal off of that model. . . then again, 3-D printers are getting to where they are more available, you could simply scan your prototype and print out a couple . . . in theory at least.

As Pickman suggested, take a look at the one described in PMM. You could make up something similar to a Q5 using those materials.
