. It'sa good point. I've got gigs lined up for the next few months, repeat gigs at that so I must have been doing something right. Rejection never comes easily, that said a member has offered to sign me in whenever I want to go down. If I only wanted to join for the prestige then I'm a shallow idiot. If I wanted to join to hang around with magicians who are better than me and too improve my skill set, then I can still do that anyway.
First off, if you want to hang around with magicians who are better than you, stay away from the magic clubs. Most don't actually perform, the ones that do are too busy performing. I belonged to the Vancouver Magic circle. We have some impressive members, Julianna Chen, Shawn Farquhar, Murray Sawchuck. And you know what? They would hang out with you apart from the club.
Second. You are having repeat gigs so if you are rejected and it is because of their standards then perhaps the standards need to be changed because you are already a working magician and obviously your customers are happy because they are booking you again.
I read a comment on this thread about not doing ACR because it is overdone. What a silly reason not to do it. Most laypeople have not seen a live magic performance and they love an ACR. Would Albert Goshman be rejected from a club because he performes sponge balls which are also 'over done'? No he would be rejected because he is dead. But that is another story.
I met the late Frank Garcia once at a magic convention. I was standing behind our booth demonstrating and I saw him and Sid Lorraine, (also dead now) talking and walking up to the booth. I freaked. There I was 16yrs old and Frank Garcia and Sid Lorraine are watching me. Talk about a case of nerves. After I was in the lobby and Mr. Garcia comes up to me and says, 'let me tell you something, never be afraid to perform in front of magicians. A good magician will help and encourage and do nothing to hinder or belittle you, we are a brotherhood. The magicians that do not support you are not worth the time or effort to worry about I don't even classify them as magicians"
I will never forget those words.
