THE LOST & FOUND card effect

Postby Daniel Bryan » Feb 24th, '13, 12:47

Hi everyone

I just wanted to post this video I'd been working on for a while, here is my reasoning behind it :)

THE LOST & FOUND was inspired by Aaron Fisher's Search and Destroy and Martin Goh's Rendezvous .

I wanted to create my own handling and routine of this classic plot in magic using some classic sleights.
I have only watched the trailers to both search and destroy and Rendezvous and I do not know of their methods .

I thought to myself how could I accomplish this beautiful plot in magic differently in its method and handling with less moves and try to make this as clean as possible.
With my own thought process I wanted to create and reproduce the same desired outcome to this classic plot in magic of a two of a kind finding a selected card.
So I came up with variation/handling.
(apologies if there is another effect out there with this name, this can always be changed)

I hope you guys like it ,
if people would be so kind to leave their thoughts on the effect I would be most grateful.
Any useful and helpful critique would be appreciated :)

Thanks for watching :)

Nice, I liked it.

Does the method allow the spectators to insert the queens? Even if it's a limited choice ("...somewhere near the top/ bottom..") I think it would strengthen the effect by adding a little more spectator involvement.

I'd drop the whole 'proving that there are only two black queens' bit at the end. It smacks a bit of 'running when you're not being chased'. All audience members will implicitly assume that you are working with a regular deck (with the standard two back queens), so there is no need to explicitly point this out. A more subtle way of driving home this point would be to spread the deck face up at the beginning (so that the audience can see the indecies of all the cards), and remove the two black queens. Let the audience see that there are only two black queens, rather than explicitly mentioning the fact. Of course all of the above is if the method permits.

In his latest book (it has also appeared on his first Lecture DVD from a few years ago) Lessons In Card Mastery Darwin Ortiz has a routine called Hard Target which is essentially the same plot as L&F,but also allows a spectator to cut the Queens into the deck, and allows the deck to be shuffled by the second spectator before their card is revealed between the two Queens. You may want to check it out. It's not 'easy' (involves perfect F**o work), but the effort is worth it for the effect.

Awesome glad you liked it :D

I totally agree with you I was in two minds when recording the video whether to put that in at the end. I see what your saying, I suppose I wanted to add it purely for magicians sake , but your right about a spectator they would more than likely assume its a normal deck.

There are some good points you said about letting them place the Queens I like that idea , the only problem is it might reveal the method used :(
I guess I will only tell by trying it out and seeing if someone picks me up on it ;)

ah Darwin Ortiz he's in a league of his own an amazing guy and only wish I could begin to scratch the surface of his material haha.

Thanks for your feedback my friend much appreciated ;)
