Is there a Card box holder, retainer type thing?

Postby Johnny Bravo » Jun 12th, '13, 01:08

Is there such a thing on the market as a regular bike deck card box that can hold back anything from 1 - 10 cards.
A deck can be put away & then brought back out with the cards in play?

Anyone know of any links to a utility device such as this?

I know you can get some wooden & plastic card boxes that will do something similar but I'd like something that looks like a regular bike deck case.

(Too many ideas in my head)

Have you tried using a regular box and just using the tuck-flap to separate the cards that are needed to be held back? When removing the cards, squeeze the box on its sides, this will cause the cards above the flap to bow outwards. When removing the rest of the deck, the thumb holds back the top-stock.

On page 96 of the book 'Bob Ostin: A Lifetime of Magical Inventions' by Stephen Tucker there are instructions on how to create your own hold out using a regular card box. It's very easy to make and would take just a few minutes.

There is a lot of other great stuff in there as well, I thoroughly recommend the book.

Spare Joker, I'm aware of the flap method, just thought their might be a better method so the flap can be shown closed.

Re Bob Ostin: A Lifetime of Magical Inventions, I must admit I bought the Stepehn Tucker Same Card wallet & was disgusted by it, hence I have never looked under his name.

Re the holdout you can make in the book, is it really simple to make, can you seal the box with the deck in or out & can you more or less show the box to be empty? Depending on your answers as to whther I spend £15 on it.

The material in the book is by Bob Ostin not Stephen Tucker, he just wrote it.

It is very simple to make. You can close the box with the cards in or out but you can't show the box to be empty. Why would you? You've just emptied all the cards out.

The flap can be shown closed! (and why would you want to show the flap closed?)

I should state the gimmick just retains a few cards in the case which can be removed later, it is not designed for secretly adding cards to the rest of the deck, though tinkering with it you might be able to. I have never actually made one, just read the instructions.

Could this be done with a sh*m and PK ring? Maybe not as many as 10 but could work with a couple? Or is the 1-10 significant to the effect?

Mmm yes, maybe, mmm was thinking along those lines when I first asked.
That & a oversized card box :-)

Mind you have never found PK Ring I like, why can't they be made in halves so one half is magnet, t other half isn't?
Would be useful to have a PK ring one could wear daily but they just pick up to much rubbish!
