In a flash help

Postby saavanstreet » Jun 11th, '13, 17:51

Hey TM people,

Does anybody know where it would be possible to obtain the 'special set' of cards needed for Jay Sankey's 'In a Flash' without purchasing a duplicate instructional DVD?
My pack has finally worn out after 3 years and needs urgent replacing! sankeymagic.com has refills but only for those who purchased the trick of his site and I have had no reply asking if he could make an exception.

Hey Saav, you can obtain a large hole punch and make your own? My friend has made over 10 decks.. :)

Hey Garry, thanks for taking the time to reply!

I grabbed a certain punched pack(mods edit if this is too much) from cards4magic last year, but the perfectly circular pattern did not seem to fool most people I performed it to! Is it possible to get special hole punches that are in the shape of the special mis-shaped circle cards that come with the DVD?

My friend works as a printer and has access to special machines that can cut strange shapes, so this is how he achieved doing this with the cards.. Don't think there are any hole punches that can cut the shape you require? :( Maybe cut your loses and buy another? Or you can join the second hand magic site on Facebook, which always have 100s of items for sale.. If my memory serves me, I am sure there was a jay sankey in a flash for sale last month for only £7..

Try Hobbycraft stores, they do hole punches in many different diameters.

There are no hole punches available that I could find specially shaped exactly as the cards, If I were to send a deck to you/your friend do you think it would be possible to cut the shape and send them back? Of course at any cost you/he desires. I'll have a look at the second hand site also, but I just want to make sure the deck is brand new (as if factory opened) and not worn because this is the reason I need a replacement of mine asap!
:)

Not certain what's changed, but my own copy of IAF (thought admittedly some 7-8 years old now) had perfectly circular holes - not an elliptical shape, which is what it sounds like the OP's has.

I never had this questioned once, and the only modification I ever made was to blacken the 'inside' of the holes with ash.

Rob, In a Flash originally came out with perfectly round holes. Jay then changed it to have odd-shaped holes. I've been trying to find a suitable hole punch to do even the round holes, but can't find a thing that will reach into the middle of a playing card.

Apparently, you can get refills now from Jay, if you've previously bought the full set from him.

low tech answer.... two pieces of scrap wood and a router bit in a bench drill.

Forstner bits work well for this, check out B&Q or Machine Mart for details.

I had this dilemma a while back as my DVD didn't have the cards. I ended up just using scissors and then introduced the edges to my good friend Mr Lighter. As a result I think I probably ended up with a more authentic result than Jays "improved" cards

Brilliant! Thanks for the router idea! I have a mate who's a very talented but retired cabinet maker, and he makes some of my props for me. I'll take him around a few packs of cards! :D
