Card to Wallet load time

Postby donpisci » Apr 10th, '11, 16:47

Hi Guys,

I've got myself a JOL hip wallet and am curious about how long it takes others to load the card? This is a p***ing wallet and at the moment, I can load it in between 3-5 seconds, but that can seem like an eternity at times!

Also, has anybody got any loading tips?

Thanks!

I just did it to see - for me its approximatley 3 seconds (from placing my hand in the pocket to coming out with the wallet), so id say 3 - 5 seconds is acceptible. Are you talking while getting the wallet out ? Talking will both misdirect the audience and make those few seconds fly by.
The wallet I have is not the JOL, its just a standard card to hip wallet. I never use it in my trouser pockets though, I always have it over my inside jacket pocket.

Thanks for that Jim, it's reassuring to know that I'm there or thereabouts, although I still need some work on it to get it more consistent.

There aren't many better card magic climaxes in my opinion, so it will be worth it!

I've used a JOL wallet forever. 3 seconds is fine, but if you possibly can, you'll want to structure the routine so that you never load when the focus is on the wallet.

In a particular card set, I would have a multiple-phase two card transpo thing, they would change places, then they would both be jokers, then the card would be in the wallet. Obviously the second phase would provide me about twenty seconds worth of cover to load the card in, and the wallet was in my back pocket to make it even easier.

Your reality, sir, is lies and balderdash, and I'm delighted to say that I have no grasp of it whatsoever.

That sounds good.

I was toying with it being the climax to an ambitious card routine- was going to end it like Tommy Wonder's AC where he talks about it all being an illusion and the the card was never in the pack in the first place etc... I know that in his routine the card ends up in a box, but you get the idea.

My cover was going to be something like handing out the deck for the spectator to have a quick look through- it should buy me enough time anyway!

I remove the wallet from my jacket pocket before the card is fully loaded and this speeds things up nicely and is totally fine unless your spectator is sat on the floor between your legs.

Don't go for speed. Go for smooth, the speed comes with time, experience, practice. Smooth finesse is the way to go each and every time.

Cheers for that Bmat- that's an important point to make. I was just wondering about the load time to make sure that I was on the right track once the card was in the pocket.

Giznorm, that's also how I do it- the way I bring the wallet out and open it allows me to fully insert the card.

Incidentally, I'm finding that I get the card part of the way in and then have to re-adjust it to get the card all of the way in. Does anybody have any tips or is it just practice, practice and then some more practice?

Does anyone have a good routine for ctw? I can get the card into the wallet, and can make a reason for it being there, but I would love to get it better!

I use card to envelope all the time its my favourite version. Also check out One short of a full Deck by Gary Jones. (amazing card to wallet routine)

Here is a clip of myself using card to wallet in my 3 Some routine. Small fumble but as you will see still only a few seconds from hand in to the card out.

If you're using a Kaps-style loading wallet, I would suggest 'The Dream Card' (Darwin Ortiz At The Card Table DVD/ book). The basic effect is that the performer shows a red-backed card in the wallet (the identity of which is not shown - yet). The spectator then selects and signs a card from a blue-backed deck. The red-backed card in the wallet is then shown to be exactly the same card as the blue-backed spectator's selection. Oh, and the card in the wallet has the spectator's signature on it.

Another good routine that works with any style of Kaps/ Balducci loader is 'The Phantom Card' (Darwin Ortiz, Cardshark DVD/ book). The effect is that a card selected and signed by a spectator is placed in the performers wallet, which is then replaced in the performers pocket. The spectator then selects a second card. This turns out to be the previously signed selection. The signed selection then vanishes whilst under the spectators hand, only to be found back in the performers wallet.
