What's in the wallet- Derren Brown: Trick of the Mind

Postby Ryan.A » Nov 29th, '13, 01:57

I'm a great fan of Derren Brown i like most of the routines he performs. I want to learn how this trick is done. Is there a DVD or book I can purchase on how to learn this specific routine/effect?

Is this routine possible in the way he performs it? Or is this just good camera angles/footage editing? Please wach the link provided.

Thanks.

No I haven't. Didn't realise he had a book you could purchase. Have you read the book? If so does explain how the routine is done?

Derren doesn't explain methods unless it illustrates a particular point, In any event, the explanation will be quite basic and something you'd get from many magic books.

Ryan...... Did you really think that Derren Brown had no books that you could purchase? Take a look at some of these.

Brown has written four books on magic: Absolute Magic, Pure Effect, Tricks of the Mind, and Confessions of a Conjuror. The first two books he penned are intended solely for practitioners of magic and mentalism, whilst his books Tricks of the Mind and Confessions of a Conjuror are aimed at the general public.
Absolute Magic, subtitled A Model for Powerful Close-Up Performance, is not so much about magical methodology as about how magicians can make their performances magical; it is written in a variety of styles: sometimes humorous, sometimes serious. He warns against an act that conveys the feeling of "Here are some tricks I've bought" and urges magicians to make their performances experiential and memorable by involving the audience. In some respects a lot of what he says is evocative of the content of Darwin Ortiz's Strong Magic but his book expresses it in the context of his experiences, performance style and theories of how performance should be. (Out of print)
Pure Effect is a more traditional book of trickery and technique and offers an insight into some of the methods that Brown employs, and offers a starting point for development for the reader's own use. (Out of print)
Tricks of the Mind is Brown's first book intended for the general public. It is a wide-ranging book in which Brown reveals some of the techniques he uses in his performances, delves into the structure and psychology of magic and discusses hypnosis. He also applies his insight to the paranormal industry, looking at the structure of beliefs and how psychology can explain why people become 'true believers'. He also offers autobiographical stories about his own experiences as a former Christian, and discusses his scepticism about religion, allegedly 'psychic' mediums and sundry other belief systems.
Confessions of a Conjuror was published by Channel 4 Books in October 2010. (ISBN 978-1-905-02657-9)

You'd be much better off with Corinda and some imagination...

In fact, if you get Mark Wilson's book (literally a few quid) there's a method in there that would let you predict this and at least two other things at the same time. A random number, the amount of money in their wallet and the last 4 digits of their bank card. How's that for value for money!

If you're interested in the methods of televised magic tricks, you really need to start thinking of them as part of a television production. Making a television programme opens up lots of avenues that will rarely, if ever, be available anywhere else, making some effects, at least, far beyond the reach of mere untelevised mortals. I'm not talking about stooges, either, just heightened levels of compliance, dual reality, increased opportunities for pre-show, or excuses for restrictions that are never made clear in the finished show.

then the only thing left is the method.

Thank you for your advise. I've seen quite a few tricks/routines that aren't available on the market, which is quite disappointing really.

What is the title of the book you are suggesting I buy?

Well the wisdom is that performers should only sell their material once they're done performing it, or once it's ceased to be a factor for their reputation. Annoying, if you've got the hots for a particular effect, but understandable. And if the method is bound up with TV production, then there's little point in releasing it broadly in any case.

I would say the methods for most TV effects are published. However the effect itself might not be.

Corinda - 13 Steps to Mentalism
Somewhere between 15 and 25 quid. Review here
ftopic23829.php

Mark Wilson is well worth having. Includes everything - cards, coins, mentalism, stage illusions.
Corinda is the definitive text on Mentalism (there are a couple of others - Annemann's Practical Mental Magic/Effects also springs to mind). Much of what Derren B does has its roots in Corinda.

If you want to do mentalism, it really is all about the performance, specifically the confidence (and experience) of the performer. None of the materials mentioned will get you there instantly.

I know Karl Fulves has a book on Self Working mentalism, but do not own it so can't comment further (perhaps some of the mentalists on here can comment - or you could search for a review). But in other areas of magic, it can be useful to develop performance style and confidence by using self working effects. That way you don't need to worry too much about sleights and can focus on the performance.

Have fun!

Ian
