I got some bad news yesterday

Postby MagicIain » Jul 27th, '05, 10:05

I lost my job.

I was working in local radio here in Essex as co-host of a breakfast show. Yesterday, our show finished at 10, the other host and myself went to get lunch, and we ate it at work in our office.

At about 11, our boss called me and asked me to see him in his office.

I was then sacked.

During the conversation it was clear that he didn't want me to tell anyone in the office, even my breakfast show colleague, and that I should leave his office, pack my bag and walk out the door without saying a word to anyone.

He didn't tell me whether or not my show-partner was staying or not, but told me to ask her to see him next, for what I assumed would be his opportunity to tell her that I had been dismissed. Half an hour later, and me and her were sitting outside, smoking a cigarette together, with her in tears. She had been sacked too. And again, told not to tell anyone in the office and just pack her bags and go.

I'm telling everyone now - please, please, PLEASE if you want to be in radio, then watch your back, work VERY hard and make as many contacts as you can.

Today, I sit at my computer at home, and I am unemployed.

It sucks.

Sorry to spring this on everyone, but when your work day goes from 5am to 1pm and you go to bed at 7 or 8pm, you don't have too many people that you can share these things with.

Sory to hear the bad news. Media really sucks at times.

Sorry to hear that. I wish I could say something that could help.

Maybe this is the opportunity you need to start doing the magic professionally?

I got made redundant 4 weeks ago... after 13 years with the same company.

It wasn't their fault though. We were bought out by another company, and they downsized the head office, where I worked, till eventually there will be no one left there.

I did get a bit of redundancy money, but in between posting and reading on here, I am job searching on the net.

One thing I will say is get yourself down the job centre and get registered as soon as.

As a plus, I have all this spare time to re-watch my magic DVD's, re-read my magic books, and re-learn some of those moves that have always troubled me in the past.

Perhaps you should, as suggested, start looking to earn from magic, if possible.

It's funny you should say that, Bananafish - a friend of mine in Hospital Radio in Colchester has a daughter who's brithday party is next week. He's asked me to do some magic, games and balloons for her. She'll be five years old.

I was going to start a thread asking for help on that - but right now I need to get a job, and quickly, too. I think the way forward has got to be a 9-5 job, and do kids parties on weekends/evenings as I can fit them in. But that's probably way off now.

I'll start a thread on that as soon as I've got my CV and a few job agencies sorted out.

By the way, does anyone need a hard-working team player with tons of initiative, two years experience in finance and A-levels in Maths, Economics and Computing?

I thought not...

Tell everyone in the office anyway - what are they going to do, sack you?

OK, maybe that's not such a good idea.

Seriously, sorry to hear that. As Mandrake said, here's an opportunity for you to get deeper into magic. (Every cloud has a silver lining and all that...).

were you told why you were sacked if not then you may have a case for unfair dismisal. :?:

No unfair dismissal - radio djs are self-employed, so it was simply a case of the contract between my company (i.e. me) and theirs being terminated, with the correct notice given. I'm being paid for my services for another month, but obviously we're no longer required.

Kati - the reason we had to leave straightaway is because management have to tell everyone at the same time, after we have left, because provisions need to be made for the successors.

I have since found out that interviews were taking place while our show was still on air.

To save us kicking up a stink, either on-air or off-air, they asked us to leave right away. It's just the way it works, and it sucks.

I wish I could go on air today and tell the world what has happened. As far as our 55,000 listeners are concerned, we no longer exist. We've been wiped from the website and any correspondence from listeners will either be ignored or fed c*** (not the best) info about where we've gone.

There's a whole load of swear-words I'd like to put here - insert one of your choice.
