Advices before a show

Postby Nox » Jul 28th, '05, 21:52

I guess there are a few threads about this in here but I can't find them (not sure what to search for)..I'm to have a little show when my friends daughter birthdayparty (they are 8 years old..) Will be a short show because I think they'll get bored if I go on and go on :P

So now I'm sitting here and making a little list on what trix I'm to do..
Right now I'm thinking on: Miser's Dream, coin wallet (the one david stone does), a card prediction and one of those "take a card and look on it, and then I find it"..

The few gimmicked things I've is 1000km north from where I'm so no gimmicked ones..

Anyone have suggestions on which more tricks I should performe?
And tips/hints on how to make a good performance in front of kids..(Iv'e never done in front of kids before, only grown ups..)

Well i do children's parties but i use props a lot (including the Mikame Coin Castle). i find that telling a little story with the tricks helps. Children like bright and visual effects, something they can understand. You could perform a cut and restore rope (i use a brightly coloured skipping rope).

Make the show fun and maybe tell a few jokes. I like to get the children to help with the tricks. If you know how to make a ballon dog then that would be good. If the children are young then you want to make the tricks simple to understand. Have you got any spongeballs? if so then you can do some clasic children's tricks with those.

If you want to do card tricks for the children then try to perform a comedy one like card on forehead.

Always be smiling and friendly towards the children.

A good cut and restored routine works very well using ungimmicked rope that can be handed out before, during and afterwards for inspection. I'd recommend such a routine for all ages and not just for kids.

a nice routine you can do is to cut a key shape out of card and thread a rope through it and tied into a loop.
then do a version of the cut and restored rope were a thief tries to steal the key by cutting the rope, then hears someone coming and ties the ends together, the keeper of the magic key returns and cuts the origional knot away thus retoring the rope, unties the loop and uses the key in a double envelope, vanishes it and it apears on the back of the assistant   .

the rope can be used for some spirit knots, dissolving knots and then a second cut and restored rope using the actual cut the loop sytem leaving you with a fraid knot "I'm a fraid knot get it" to give away, all for a bit of card some sissors and a bit of rope.

then theres cups and balls with party cups and knapkins, which can be a chop cup routine if you happen to have a chopping device and english penny or similar device in the special ball.

Also don't foget the impossible knot routine (appear to tie a knot in a rope and pull it off with your hand)

I made up an little mix, started out with misers dream..then I made a few rope routines (thank good for the possibilti to buy and download dvds on the internet :), then the old cut and restore, penwallet (pretending their's a coin in the wallet), then some coins that disapear and reapear with the help of the kids. Most of it was joking and talking, and less was magic. I was there to entertain and I just talked with the parents and they think i did a great job.
As a final I faned out the cards, let her(the girl that had birthday) choose one, then I mixed it up in the deck, pretendet to have lost it completly (ask her if this was her card for bout 3 cards) and then I gave her a present (a braclet and a jumboversion of the card she had chose)..should have seen their eyes when they saw the card apear in the present ;)

I think you had a good time, well done! I like especially the idea with the jumbo card at the end.
