Ways to get gigs?

Postby seamagu » Mar 10th, '16, 11:49

Hey Everyone,

Its been a while since I've been on here.

Just wanted to start a thread about possible ways of getting gigs.

Obviously you want to get paid for performing and you certainly don't want to undercut professional performers that rely on performing as their main source of income. However, performance time is essential for most of us. It is so much more rewarding than performing for friends and family.

Here is where I currently get some of my gigs and/or performance opportunities (some paid, some not paid)

1. Fringe festivals
2. Community groups
3. Charity balls
4. Down the pub - random strangers and bar staff (bar staff are great as word quickly spreads among them)
5. Other Magicians/mentalists on Skype
6. Work Colleagues
7. When I'm picking up a take out (food) I always perform for the poor guy serving me...its also a restaurant so I'm hoping that would lead to something

Work colleagues can be a bit scary as you have to face them every day so if you mess up you might feel awkward.
However, performing for colleagues has directly led to some paid gigs for me

If any one else has any ideas I'd love to hear them,

Best,

Séa

Doing magic for servers when it comes to picking up take-out strikes me as just being rude. To me that is just giving magic a bad name.

There are ways of getting experience (which is different from getting gigs). But you can do it without imposing on people.

Fair point Tony.

I'd like to think I'm not too imposing but I'll take your comment on board.

Any others to add to the list?

thanks,

Putting together professional promo package.

Submitting that to package to agents
Doing research on local companies and finding out who is in charge of entertainment and quarterly kick off meetings, (if they have them) or company parties and picnics. Sending promo package to those people.
Networking by going to local clubs such as toastmasters, small business people, community outreach etc.
Schools (for all ages groups)
Youth and old age centers
Libraries

Just don't go cheap. You are selling yourself, the magic is secondary. If you are going to go cheap you may as well not do it at all.
