The Dodo issue 221b Roy Walton

Back in February 2020 last year the magic world lost one of the greats. This Dodo issue, much like Roy Walton, is a one-off tribute to the man. It’s an insightful homage to Roy Walton; both his thinking, person, approach and magic. I’m not a qualified student of Roy Walton by any means, I own the Complete Walton 1 & 2 and shamefully I only perform Card Warp and Smiling Mule. I’ve been brought up on bad diet of lumps of Easy to Master Card series, with dollops of Daryl’s Encyclopedia of card magic, before becoming serious and really studying the history and reading books. Roy Walton’s material much like a fine wine requires a connoisseur to truly appreciate the value and bring it to life. I am by no means a connoisseur, and need help appreciating it, I will get there! I really appreciate the guidance offered in this issue not only in the tricks but the surrounding text.

I can only view the material contained in this issue as a card enthusiast and Jerry Sadowitz has brought to the fore material that is little known, and also offered variations on Roy Walton’s material. His commentary before the tricks is insightful, putting the trick into context and helping the reader understand the effects depth. My first thought after reading this issue was this: if this material had been higher profile (way back) it's very likely that some of the plots would have gone in many different directions and card magic might be in a totally different place now, a mind blowing thought, seriously the material is that good.

Perhaps this is a reflection on the state of magic today, where the end game and reason for creativity and material is for (sometimes) the wrong reason. In the past few years I’ve seen three variations of the ID being sold at the Blackpool magic convention, none make it better, and it shows that in some cases the motivation to create may be monetary based and not for the love of the art or even worse, material for the sake of material to fill page space or sell decks, when there are better versions in print / released. A sweeping statement which does not encompass all, but I’m sure readers will appreciate my point here.

On the point of the Blackpool Magic convention ’20 (a fantastic convention) it’s a shame that the sad occasion of Roy passing was not marked in some way. I even tried to encourage performers/lecturers to do a Walton trick at Blackpool, but sadly it didn’t happen. Sadly, I did not hear one mention of his name. Even a projected image of Roy before one of the shows would have been fitting.

Talking of tributes, magicians may remember a segment Jerry Sadowitz did on the The Pall Bearer's Revue on BBC2 called the Roy Walton moment. Jerry Sadowiz would don a flat cap and perform a Walton trick. I remember a work colleague asking me about Roy Walton and what it was all about, and I loved the fact that someone that did not have a clue about magic mentioned his name. I did Card Warp for him and it (as always) hit home.

I am not going to provide a blow by blow account of any of the tricks in this issue, it would not be in keeping with the spirit that the issue is offered. Although I cannot resist saying that there is an outstanding finale to card warp that takes things to a satisfying conclusion, away from a potential puzzle to a magical ending. I’m saying no more, but from what I can tell it looks like a Jerry Sadowitz thing, and the student has done master proud in both the issue, and finale in question.

A 10 out of 10 fitting tribute to honor the memory of ‘the greatest card conjuror of them all’ (the words in quotes is the tagline used for the issue). Buy it now (if you still can - June ‘20), you must contact Jerry Sadowitz by email first- JerrySadowitz@hotmail.com - £25 for me when I brought it.

My personal wish is that Jerry Sadowitz considers doing more of this sort of thing as he’s brought the material to light and also life.

And another wish that nobody illegally shares this issue, please give it the respect it deserves!

It's very likely that all 100 copies were sold and sent, because it's limited to 100 copies. So i doubt very much you would be able to get a copy now.
