I keep saying I'm going to go to another one of these conventions .... and I never get round to it.

I can't believe it's eleven years since I last went when David Blaine was there and I picked my badge up off you Mandrake .... which I'm sure I'll still have somewhere :)

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Time certainly flies, our old pal Gunnar sent me some photos of when the TMers met up at Blackpool. It was waaaay back in 2007! I've bought tickets for 2021, all I have to do is live long enough to use them!!!

As we now know, Blackpool 2021 is postponed until 2022 but, courtesy of www.magicweek.co.uk there's good news!

A Special Announcement from the Blackpool Magic Convention Team: We all know that 2021 wouldn’t be the same without some kind of Blackpool Magic Convention and so with that thought in mind we’re very excited to announce our 2021 Virtual Blackpool Magic Convention. We’ve set ourselves two main criteria to make this a special event.

1 - It will be a live stream with both performances and lectures, that you’ll be able to interact with live online.

2 - This will be a FREE day as way of thanks for your incredible support over the years. Last year we hit record numbers of nearly 5,000 and this support is much appreciated. Thank you again.

This won’t be a glorified Zoom meeting, but an actual live event from a locked off Winter Gardens where you’ll be able to interact online as it happens. Details and date to follow. 23.1.21

Well, I watched this for three hours or so. I’m not sure why The Ruskin was mentioned as this Zoom event was nothing like being in the Ruskin! OK, it’s not easy to recreate the packed crowds, the background shouting and noise and the half hour wait to get a round of drinks but this was nothing like my memories of the Ruskin. Instead it seemed to consist mainly of Ben Earl and Mark Calabrese chatting, occasionally doing a slight or move to illustrate a point, and one or two other occasionally making a point but I didn’t see any sense of wider sharing from others which is what usually happens in the Ruskin. It was more like I’d stumbled on the two of them having a great time swapping stories and thoughts but no real involvement of others which is ironic because one of the topics they mentioned was people feeling a bit left out at conventions and the way that some groups tend to be unwilling to open up to newcomers. Perhaps I missed the point completely! Roll on 2022 when we can do the Ruskin in the flesh!
