Is anyone still alive?

Postby AJ1 » Jan 26th, '22, 14:22

I am just wondering if there are still active people still on this forum? I haven't seen new posts in a long time.

Things are very certainly slow and have been for a while. We get a lot of visits but almost no new posts – most new posts are deleted as they are either off topic or just plain illegal – porn, medications, fake goods and so on, each day I generally prune between 5 and 20 new registrants who only visit to post such stuff.

General feeling is that bulletin boards like TM just aren't as popular as they used to be and it could be that things like Facebook have taken over although I'm told that even on FB the traffic is minimal. I used to regularly check other boards such as the Bunny and the Green Place (!) but haven’t done so for ages so I don’t know how we compare. A lot of our old ‘regulars’ have either given up on magic or given up posting, perhaps they have less time than before? I would have expected an increase in posts during lockdowns and self-isolation periods but no evidence of that happening at all.

The good news is that your post count is not only high but very welcome!

I think it's probably a catch 22 scenario.

As a new member here, I quite regularly sign in to this (superb) forum - but when I check for new posts and see there's nothing added, I just sign out again - without actually adding anything myself.

I wonder if there are others doing similar and how this could be tackled - hopefully without going down the green place route of asking "what's the best" or "what's your top 10" blah blah blah. These generally stagnate into utterly pointless drivel.

I'm not sure about Facebook and/or other social media, as I never use it.

However, there are two other forums I read aside from magic - one for Leyton Orient Football Club and also the UK Speedway Forum. I have noticed that posts around various topics upon these, appear to have dropped off quite significantly, compared to a few years ago.

I log in every morning and sometimes comment in threads if I have something intelligent to say. I don't remember starting a thread, though.

Quite an ironic song really, given that three of the Bee Gees died aged 30, 53 and 62.

In the words of Bernard Manning - "they say life begins at 40.......tell that to John Lennon."

There you go Mark; you may only be half alive but you are faring better than some others. Anyway, from the folk I met in Canada, I thought that it was a prerequisite of living there.

A prequisite of living here is trying to avoid dying from hypothermia!

It's all in your mind.

The next time your joints start seizing up and you start turning blue, just take your mind back to those enjoyable long, hot Summer days on Blackpool's Central Pier. :D

Blackpool winters are actually better than Toronto winters, albeit a bit miserable. Oddly enough . and people don't realise it but Toronto has glorious summers. Blackpool not so much. The main problem I found with Blackpool were the gale force winds. I got so sick of the cards blowing into the sea when I worked Central Pier. I had to use fishing weights to hold the cards down. It was an absolute nightmare.

When I lived in Ireland it rained every second day. I have often said that living in Ireland was like living in a puddle and living in Canada is like living in a fridge!

I'm glad you're looking on the bright side, Mark! :D

Just to confirm I'm still here ..... I log on every now and again, but I can't remember the last time that I posted on here :(

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??
