Character

Hello all.

I am seriously considering entering the Young Magician Of The Year competition in two years time.

I would like my act to be comedic and theatrical but not stand-up comedy.

How would I go about devising a character and are there any character suggestions?

Regards,

Oliver

Are you sure that 2 years is long enough to devise a character?

What sort of magic do you do?

Are your intentions visual comedy, i.e. comical productions?

Advice:
Don't try to emulate anyone you've seen (Sylvester the Jester, Tommy Cooper, Penn & Teller - all 'comedy' but not stand-up).

Be original - be yourself. Magic is hard enough to perform, but comedy AND magic??? A tough act.
If you're genuinely a funny person, why bother developing a character?
Is your magic not entertaining enough???

i agree with seige, some people use charachterisation to overcome shyness (maybe using a silly voice or trying to mimic a great performer) but this is only a short term thing. To develop a character would entail pretty much redesigning your personality and living the way you perform which to be fair isnt really practical, i mean if i acted the same way all day id probably be divorced and homeless and unemployed and pretty much smacked in the teeth quite often..

Simple answer is just be yourself

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. - Kristian Wilson, Nintendo, Inc, 1989..
