card size??

Postby louisglazebrook » Aug 14th, '05, 02:28

I've done a search and couldn't find anything so I thought I'd ask is there a standard size of card for magicians? Should a performer be using a bridge size, or poker sized deck? Or is it just what they prefer.

I know it is tonnes easiers using bridge decks for and flourishes etc. But is it cheating?

i wouldnt say it's cheating at all. I'd say use which you prefer.

Personally i'd much rather manipulate a bridge deck, but i figured that because most card gimmicks / gaffs are sold in bicycle poker size it would be better off using them.

Also i've seen people with smaller hands than me use a poker size deck very proficiently so i've got no excuse :)

I just think standard Poker sized decks are used more often and have a better design. The USPCC cards are very nice and I'd prefer to stick to them. I have very small hands so it is fairly hard for me.

Poker cards tend to be more visible since they are slightly larger, and since most gaffs are made in Bikes they are the obvious choice. But always go with what you are most comfortable with, there is no reason to force yourself to use one type just because most of the rest of us do.

I always use poker size cards, they look better when performing.
Size does matter!

I would go with Poker sized cards, since a good 99% of manipuative moves, are described with them.
Besides, if you were say, back palmiing cards, you will soon find that the smaller with makes Bridge sized cads very difficult to control.
Try it yourself, and you will see what i mean.

For back-palming I use bridge-sized Bee decks. This is thanks to Mr Jeff McBride and his videos. He suggests using Bee's for this.

For other tricks, sleights, packet tricks, etc... I use poker-sized Bikes and Tally's. Nearly all gaff cards are manufactured in poker-size, and most of the packet tricks you will buy are also poker-size cards.

Cheers,

I'd say go with poker sized decks they are better for doing magic, but i find that a bridge size deck is good for learning moves.

One method i use at learning slieghts is to use a bridge deck first then go onto a poker deck but only using about half the cards (so you can get your hands round them easier). Then just keep adding 4 or 5 cards at a time until you are up to a full deck. :)

Hope this helps.
