Card Mentalism

Postby trickyricky » Aug 21st, '05, 19:06

I have realised that i am really enjoying the effects in card magic when it appears that you have read your spectators mind. I already have an ID but i was looking for deeper stuff that i could do with a normal deck of cards. Is there any dvds or books out there that deal solely with card mentalism effects, such as making someone think of the card that you want them to, or knowing which card they have glanced at and memorised, etc.?

Thanks, Rich

I was born with Multiple Personality Disorder. Luckily, they are all me, they just dont always get along...

Derren Brown. Devil's Picturebook and Pure Effect. Pure Effect has one of the greatest mentalism card effects Ive seen: 'Smoke'. The magician spreads a deck out on the table and turns his back. A spectator merely looks at a card and memorises it. The magician then puts the deck aside. He then proceeds to name the card the spectator was thinking of. You think the trick is over, the magician lights a cigarette and sits back. He then spreads the deck out again - only to find the card is missing from the deck. Suddenly he starts coughing and the spectator looks up to see the chosen card rolled up, being smoked by the magician.
Brilliant trick.

Extreme mental effort is good also in TDPB and it doesn't require any memorised decks or stacks :D

I liked the Max Maven videos. He has some excellent stuff and I got on with it better than the Richard Osterland material.

There are also a multitude of tricks that you can make up yourself with a decent set of marked cards. If I'm travelling light that's all I take with me.

I agree entirely. You can perform truly astounding feats of mentalism with a marked deck, especially if specs are determined to believe in the paranormal.
