Daryls ambitous gimmick

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

Goldfish:

Yes, I did add the extra flapcards, and I have the same experience as you as well. I think I will build the gimmick once again, and fix the "errors" i have done. They are minor, but I see potential to my existing one. Of course, it would be nice to buy it as well, as it so cheap, but, again, nice to build it yourself as well.

Have you used it yet?

I'm going to try it out tonight, I'll let you know how it goes.

I havent tried it out yet. Need to polish it first, and add some more moves to my existing routine.

Another thing is, Daryl really kills the talk about "don't do the ambitous card routine too long. 3 or 4 is enough". Haha, I think he's doing like 10 or 12. :)

A pall of mine made one up. It took ages, and doesnt look as good as a bought one.If you are going to use it, you might as well get one ready made.

Yea, I think if I ever use this properly, I'll be buying it. To be honest, mine looks a bit naff, especially after a bit too much handling.

Because a layman may get bored watching the same effect over and over again - an effect that doesn't use a DL is impressive to magicians but nothing different to a layman.

Therefore, although an effect may become more and more impressive to a magician, that is not so much true for a layman, so the routine has to be shorter.

I agree with Katriealex. this was one of the first card tricks I really mastered and therefore probabaly did far to many phases of the routine. I found that people would really begin to lose interest by the fifth phase and it took a while for me to realise that it was because specs were getting bored with seeing the same effect over ane over. definately go with a smaller routine varying the effect slightly- card to mouth ala Oz Pearlman, card to deck held in specs hand etc etc. quality not quantity

I think that laymen do regularly get bored with Ambitious Card but not for the reasons that you state.

It's such a good card trick so too many people have done this trick to death and as you have said, it's usually the first trick that people learn so their presentation is not usually up to scratch.

In too many instances, Ambitious Card has been over exposed and with little variety in how it's presented. In the hands of a far more experienced performer with much greater card skills, Ambitious Card can still be a fantastic trick for the layman and event a magician to watch, without them losing interest. From what I've seen so far, I'm sure that many of us think of Rune as being in this category so I for one am looking forward to his presentation!
