Magic suitable for accompanying Hard Rock music

Postby Jordan C » Dec 27th, '05, 16:28

Hey guys

Over this last year I have been to some awesome concerts and really honed my taste for rock music into the more harder melodic rock and modern punk. Now I dont want to be a punk etc, far removed but I did start to think about how these shows deliver so much energy as the music is so charged.

I then started thinking how can I use some of this music to accompany magic routines. The obvious answer I came up with is the kind of gothic magic route where the music complements the magic complements the music etc. Highly visual, highly charged.

But then I started thinking that I havent really seen that much goth type magic in your "general magic store" online or otherwise so Where do you get magic that would fit what I have in mind??

I'm interested in the smaller stuff as well as large scale. At this point in time I am simply looking at my options so I would be grateful for anywhere I can be directed to by you guys!!! Please help! :)

There is pleanty of it around really. Just look for any geek kind of magic. Like the needle through arm, which most places have it...

www.penguinmagic.co.uk
www.internationalmagic.com
www.alakazam.co.uk

ect...

Also, there is a guy in the states I think that specializes in prosthetics for really bizaar magic. (Cutting a coin from your arm ect, like Criss Angel). I don't remember the link, but maybe someone else has it?

Needle thru Arm is not quite what I mean. I mean stuff with much more punch and impact that is suitable for performing to crowds. Illusions etc.

I have searched the mainline stores such as alakazam and have said I have not had much luck with the general online magic store. Your tips on the guy with prosthetics etc tho is appreciated and I am searching for him now. If I find him I'll post his info.

Can anyone name successful goth/horror magic acts. With all this christmas spirit and beer flowing freely I am completely brainblocked!!!

Oh and any decent fire tricks, not simple flash gimmicks but really good fire tricks would be an advantage, some of you will know of my previous forlorn search for decent fire. Has anything new come about in the last year?

you could also try Blackhart magic..some serious storytelling/gothic stuff

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. - Kristian Wilson, Nintendo, Inc, 1989..

Why don't you start here... http://www.dragonskull.co.uk/main_map.htm

Then, you may want to check this out... http://www.icbmmagick.com/index.html

If you do not have it as of yet, get a copy of Rick Maue's BOOK OF HAUNTED MAGICK and you may want to visit Rick's web site to get some additional ideas as to what is what in this side of the business http://www.deceptionsunlimited.com

If you do a google you will find other Bizarre Magick groups like the Shadow Network and too, many forums have special sections that deal exclusively with Bizarre styled material.

You would be doing yourself a very big favor picking up just about everything put out by Docc Hilford, Ed Solomon, Gene Poinc, and Bro. Shadow if this is the direction you are wanting to move into but keep certain things in mind.

1.) If you are over 30 years in age, you may want to reconsider the hard rock/grunge image... you're too old to be accepted by those that patronize said market.

2.) Unless you want to go hungry, DON'T PANDER TO THE AFOREMENTIONED MARKET... not only is it overly saturated by others seeking to mimic Criss Angel, David Blaine, etc. the majority of those involved in this scene are strung out, have little to no money, and are constantly looking for hand-outs vs. paying their way (I say this based on several years of working said market... it's simply not profitable!)

3.) It's easier to deliver solid Macabre type material when you appear to be "normal" than it is dressing in Goth Drag, looking strange, and trying to play a heavy "vampire-like" entity. The psychology is far superior in what you are doing from this position vs. the more dramatic & theatrical aspect that very few have the ability to pull off (or the willingness to get the coaching and direction that will allow them to pull it off in a believable manner).

Magic & Rock-n-Roll have been bed fellows for many years, including the bizarre side of it all. In the 70s Alice Cooper's "Nightmare" tour was composed of many grand illusions pulled together by James Randi & John Gaughan (I've actually used the Guillotine from that show on an ocassion or two). Franz Harary supplements his income by creating massive illusions for noted Rock/Recording artists like Janet Jackson, Madonna, etc. So don't think you're being "original" by seeking out this market, it is heavily influenced by effects designers of all kinds and it takes serious cash to make a dent into said venues, along side prove reputation.

These resources will get you started and too, you'll find other links and resources by checking them out.

Best of luck in your adventure.

Craig that was a fantastic reply and I thank you very much for it. RE:

I certainly wouldnt be looking to be a pastiche of a goth. I agree with your point re coming from a normal disposition and this is what I would do if using any goth routine. Thanks to all who have offered suggestions, if there are any more please keep them coming and I'll pick up on them in the new year.

Again I would have to say I'm not looking to pander to this scene. Instead I am looking to develop a set using the music and imagery - possibly. To be honest I have a particular routine in mind but what I am looking for are the fillers for the routine, the smaller to mid scale illusions and effects that are used to maintain interest in the overall routine.

When I have figured out exactly what I want to do I'll post my 'hypothetical' routine in the secrets area.

Please keep suggestions coming. Thanks guys
