Postby MagicTom » Jan 2nd, '06, 16:33

Hi Guys,

Just wondering hwo you store and transport your magic props etc.

I keep all mine in a large suitcases.

Eventually i'd like to buy a proper magicians table / case
They are all so expensive though?

Anyone know of a cheap dealer of these tables?

There are various ways of making them but i am not a DIY person at all. (Infact more of a DIY Faliure! lol)

For some of my small items i've started using a pencil case. It's plenty big enough,
in it at the moment (main compartment)
3 decks of cards
a couple of small wallets containing various packet tricks
a trick called free will
a little cloth bag containing various coins and an okito coin box
and a coin trick made of brass (forgotten what it's called).

(zipped front)
Dreamweaver
3 ring circus
a pen (sometimes used as wand)
No Smoking (great trick).

That about sets me up for any performance. As for a table i use an old keyboard stand with a cloth covered board for the working surface.

ok for the not so diy fanatics out there heres a few idea's used by yours truly.

1) a bed side cabinet you know the ones with a draw in the top and a cupboard underneath a bit of foam glued to the top and a thick piece of rope clued round the edge to stop thoughs pesky sponge balls from rolling off the top, most already have holes for wheels if not you can get wheals already on bases from diy stores.
sub note mfi / compressed wood ones are heavy but second hand ones made of mdf or box wood are ideal and paint well, pine is ok but can get battered quickly.

2) close up performers should look for a tackle box or makeup case, plenty of conpartments to keep your stuff ordered and seperated and most have a bottom section for ditching / reseting stuff.

3) a bimbag worn round the front ala training sporen.

4) piano stands make ideal table stands as already mentioned.

'The Works' were selling music stands very cheaply before Christmas so they might be selling them again soon. We had some discussion on this topic a couple of years back and I think one suggestion was to use a plastic toolbox - lots of compartments etc to hold small and large items, easy to close up and carry with you, and it's also handy to sit on if there's nowhere else to park your butt!

I store and transport my props in some of those aluminium style photo cases amd then load into my pockets when I get to the venue.

The reason that I don't put things into my pockets first is all of that getting in and out of the car, standing up and sitting down again etc.

B&Q sell three sizes of case starting at £10.99 for a case that's about 12X10 inches by approx 5 inches deep.

Hi Tom,

I'm using an extremely old rollon table/case. The design is pretty simple and you can knock one up in an afternoon with a bit of MDF, a few wheels (four usually :-) ) and some hinges.

I am slowly working on a new design for my next one so will give you a call on FCM when mine is about to become surplus to requirements.

As an idea they look like this:

Just remembered seeing this case, which looks nice:

Image.

I use a 'Stanley' Contractor's rolling toolbox and the rollon when I transport and perform and the whole house when it's stored back at home!

I have also seen a chap who uses three stacking crates with lids which were about 18 * 30 inches and were about 20 inches deep. These had roller feet on the bottom one (not much use in the middle really) and some black material which was stuck, using velcro, to make it look like a table. The finishing touch was a semi-hard foam insert which raised the table surface out of the dip in the lid and gave a good close-up mat finish to the job.

Reckon that would cost you about £25 - 30.

Nice one Vic,

Do you have somekind of instructions to make them or do you use your DIY genius knowledge?
???

Just checked that close up case out..

Its £69.99 from emagictricks! AHH!

lol

At the moment i transport all my stuff in 1 large suitcase. (packed in amongst a straight jacket which takes up alot of room!!!)
I then have 2 collapsable boxes that i cover with a cloth, to put stuff during the show i also use this as a tbale when performing magic with my vent partner - but it only holds light stuff!!! And as a ventriloquist, i have a vent table that i sometimes use but it only has a small top! (for the puppet / figure to sit on)
I am trying to cut down the amount of stuff i need to take. It would be useful to have it in a case, readilly set up where i need it to be so i can open it and perform!!!!!!!!!

BUT they cost so much from mosyt online shops!!! ahh! lol
Personally, i'd rather buy a nice trick or a few nice tricks / books?!?!?! than 1 case!

I found an old box case that my Dad used to have when he was a photographer. I keep all my bits and bobs in there, but I couldn't tell you where to get one sorry :?
