Second and bottom dealing

Postby Paul Bolt » Jan 3rd, '06, 15:49

I have been trying to perfect my second and bottoms and whilst I am "getting away" with my bottom deal ( I use the SF from Marlo's bottoms seconds and centres) I have found that occasionally I am getting spotted on my seconds as the top card remains in view. I could mask this by rolling the cards towards me but I'd prefer not too if I can help it. In a nutshell, what I asking for is does anybody know of a video link showing someone dealing seconds so that I can get a feel for how the top card should look, the size of the brief and how the top card moves back into the original position. I was given Darwin Ortiz at the card table for my birthday in early December and would like to use some of the routines where seconds are used in my work with absolute confidence. I have practised I assure you and was stunned when someone spotted my seconds over Christmas.

Happy New Year.

Paul

If you pay no attention to the deck when you are dealing seconds, noone else will either (unless you have set up a challenge atmosphere beforehand).

There are some clips of bottom and second dealing at www.virtualmagicshow.com/deals

Take care, Ian

firstly and most importantly use borderless cards (Bee decks are ideal)

depending on what type of second deal you do you could be showing in various ways... try getting hold of the Fernando Keops dvd for some tips

yeah Brian Tudor did release a DVD, I think it was Card Sharp ( not to sure about the name lol) I know the actual content of teaching the actual moves is pretty poor, but the moves you do learn can come in handy, well I say that if you want to cheat :D

Bill Simon's book "Card Magic for Amateurs and Professionals" has a step by step guide with exercises to teach you the second deal. It is widely regarded as one of the great learning resources for this move and you can pick up the Dover reprint for about a fiver

Often we aren't aware of the mistakes we are making, thus I recommend you start by filming yourself from various angles dealing slowly and watching the dealing action carefully to spot the disparities.

For example, Ian Kendall's deals are quite good, but there are a couple tip offs that give it away if you're watching closely. In the case of the seconds it's the grip on the card shifting (partially related to a slight change in the take location) as well as a slightly different action of the card as it's dealt from the deck. When it comes to bottoms it is due to a slight flash when he goes for the bottom card. Be that as it may, his deals would fly in most company.
